The moment PC gamers convinced a studio to bring their games over to PC and then became their biggest customers, thus putting their money with their mouth is?
Really, I think that this is actually one of the few examples of PC gamers actually doing that. Most of the time they beg for ports then pirate them.

PC gaming will never die. Just expand your horizons and realize that the universe of video games goes beyond some blockbuster full of marketing hype.

I don't know why, since PCs have come with joysticks since the beginning. My brother had a crappy clone of some Apple computer back then, and the only thing besides the keyboard and computer (it was all one piece) was a really shitty joystick with a single button.

Wrong, it happened much earlier when publishers forced PC only devs to make their sequels for consoles too. See Deus Ex 2, Crysis 2, FEAR 2 etc.

Because if you buy special peripherals to play a game it's to enhance the experience, like a racing wheel + pedals + gearbox or flight stick + throttles.
A gamepad is the lowest common denominator and every games designed around it are limited by the small amount of buttons, the poor accuracy of the joysticks.
It shifted the entirety of game design to mediocre experiences and even now you'll find people that will not buy a game on steam if it doesn't have gamepad support.

PC was already fucked when investors got bamboozled into continuing to back obsolete home consoles after 5th gen, just because the DVD player sold a lot.
So many genres and series got fucked over by the need to appeal to controllerslop, bad CPUs and normalfags.
PC gaming can't die, but the fake consoles (PCs and ARM tablets) dancing on the grave of PC gaming are holding everyone back.

This. Sure the consoles got a worse version of the original game a few years down the line, but the sequels to these games normalized everyone getting the worst version of every game, which was catastrophic for everything put into development after 2007ish.

DS PTD is one of the first instance I remember of a game releasing in a dogshit state and unplayable without a gamepad. There might have been other japanese trash before that came out where you had to move the camera with IJKL but it never really had a cultural impact to the ecosystem.
This is the game that single handly forced everyone to get a 360 gamepad because that is the only one ever supported by games releasing in that timeframe. So if you had anything else you had to scrounge the net for software to emulate your input into a 360 one.
Also don't even get me started on all those xbox live titles that all came out at the same time because they finally saw there's a market to sell their trash there as well

The "PC Master Race" movement which triggered a huge slide of console kids to PC, especially chasing streaming, who brought with them their absolutely non-existent shit eating standards which in turn rapidly led to PC games because worse and worse technically. Crysis was very well optimized. You just had to lower the settings and it ran even on potatos. Of course it looked like shit too, but thar is the price of optimisation. Many people cranked it to max which was meant for future hardware.
