They wanted to unleash it. They were never not depraved mercenaries GATE employed without doing solid background checks. This organization has more holes than the standing US Government, basically paper mache. You learn of scientists ignoring protocol for fun (Even Manse admits to doing it with the gravity cube), protocols that make no sense, at one point Manse says he will not consider ever releasing anything into the dam, another audio log right after confirms he permitted the sea monster to be released there. He basically didn't ever consider it would grow and refused to even entertain the idea until he couldn't deny reality anymore. They left the soda machine out in a public hallway (even the security robots were taking cans and distributing them elsewhere.

It's actually difficult to concisely summarize how bad GATE was at their job.

Of course it's easy for people to say in retrospect that it's obvious, but as someone who played through the game last year when these threads still didn't exist, I had absolutely no insight into IS-0012 outside of manse recordings. Maybe I didn't pick up on or forgot bits of information during the playthrough, but I clearly wasn't aware that he was in the shapeshifter pen. Maybe some will have noticed that detail immediately, but certainly wasn't at the forefront of my mind. Obviously he wasn't a normal individual showing up in places he clearly shouldn't be, but I wouldn't know what exactly until playing months later with 1.0 where I'd forgotten most things.

The big giveaway even in early access (At least to me) was that you find a shade in the night realm named Dr.Cahn, and because of Chekhov's gun you'd probably assume that's the real one.

My first thought the idea was that the reaper/night realm was responsible for cloning Dr.Cahn and creating an evil twin while trapping the real one, and maybe that's the best conclusion you could have made in early access.

I also want to add though. I don't know if it was only added recently or not, but in the tutorial when you're about to finish, the instructor guy tells you to find Dr.Cahn. If you remembered that then you'd be a lot less likely to immediately assume the Dr.Cahn you find is a shapeshifter because you'd know him.

Cahn has been dead for 2 years, no one in the email chain for the protagonist ever bothers to look into who was using his email. They left the corrupted VHS tape bleed into the arcade machine. They were letting people use the arcade machine for leisure. There are so many things they weren't doing right it's hard to believe it took them as long as it did to make real mistakes. Manse had to leave extra warnings about 102 but still left him in the same cell, with the unassuming bell, as if they weren't completely sure it still wasn't the bell.

Flathill is distinct enough from Silent Hill that you could make your own spiritual successor of sorts using it as a setting, while still having enough room to do your own thing and have it be good.
Flathills monsters aren't fueled by the spiritual, they're just some extra-dimensional horror trying to crawl through, and the creature design for the composers and symphonists are a certain kind of uncanny I haven't seen many horror games make use of before.

Make the screw mine. Two or three if you can, but just one will work fine. Lead it into a mine (the closer to the wall the better). Run away and rearm the mine(s) with more screws. It should only take 4 or 5 triggers to kill it, depending on how many screws land. It fires them off in a shotgun cone, like a claymore. You can also be shooting it while kiting to ensure the kill. The first time I played through the game with friends we took too long to progress so we ran out of "Free" water so we had to boil it. It didn't help there were a lot of players chugging it and presumably some with the trait that makes them thirstier faster. I was the cook so that made me in charge of the water too.
That said you can cut down on the tedium a lot by just having a lot of stoves + a lot of pots so you can boil 10 pots of water at once. Getting barrels so you can carry more tainted water to purify helped a lot too.

Soup is blatantly overpowered, it's basically impossible to starve if you just have a single consistent soup.

For example, an MRE restores 30 hunger. A soup which is ONLY an MRE restores 18.75 hunger, in four portions that you can drink twice each.
That means you are turning a single ingredient from 30 hunger into 150 hunger.

All you need to do to make the hunger mechanics in this game a joke is learn 1 soup you can use repeatedly (Ex. Bland pea soup, pest soup, etc). Then eat before you leave base and bring a soup can with you for long trips (Feel free to throw it away if you need the inventory space). Once you do that you've beaten the game.
Then for end game A&L stew is the best food in the game so you can get that if you really want.

The only real non-soup foods that are worth considering later in the game are the salad wrap (Good food with minimal hassle, so perfect for lazy people) or the freyed rice.

Leaving home with full hunger + thirst and a soup can basically invalidates it, even if you have both traits that make you hungrier and thirstier.
If you get to later in the game and that's STILL not good enough, just plant 2 tomatoes, space lettuce and greyeb plants. 4 lettuce wraps in your inventory will satisfy hunger and thirst for an entire week and they don't even need to be cooked. Once the plants are fully grown they will shit out so many ingredients you will never worry about thirst or hunger ever again. Build a moisture collector and you don't even need to water them.

If that's STILL too annoying for you, then just turn off hunger/thirst in the options. Like goddamn.

Not that anon but if you pick a job that starts with bonus levels in a skill, they get a huge permanent EXP buff to the skill. If you pick jobs that start with crafting you can feasibly get 15+ crafting by the end of the game just by playing pretty normally.

sprinting attacks are instantaneous and have knockback/stun. The only tricky thing about them is getting used to sprinting in a circle so you can multi-hit enemies. But realistically nothing survives more than 3 swings, which means you also never damage your weapons or have to worry about energy charge or ammo or blah blah. I genuinely wish spears were better because they are my favorite weapon in vidya. It doesn't help that all of the upgrades are elemental gimmicks that get completely fucking nullified in the lategame.

Anon they are literally in the process of nerfing throwing as we speak because you can one shot pretty much anything from across the map by throwing weapons. It doesn't matter if your sprint attack one shots things if throwing weapons can do the same thing but from any distance.
Not only is it ranged which gives it a big advantage over melee, but it's perfectly accurate as long as you know the throw arc, which gives it a big advantage over guns too.

The Quantum pick is good but early throwing is good. Once you get the early perk that lets you auto pick up objects, you can use it in melee range and instantly pick up your weapon again, or just have 2-3 weapons to throw.
Basically once you make the electric spear or collect a couple of swords from the furniture store you're golden. Everything from there feels like a joke. The quantum pick is good don't get me wrong, but that's mostly just because you don't have to worry about fucking up and losing your weapon because you threw it wrong.

The thing is that weapons specifically for throwing damage like darts are pretty ass (Outside of stunlocking once you hit 15). It's all about finding the highest base damage sharp weapon you can throw and sticking with that. I'm pretty sure the moment you get access to the lightning spear in early Cascade labs, throwing becomes insanely good. That's not THAT early in the game sure, but I wouldn't say it's "85%" of the game by any means.

You get 200 shots of an energy pistol for 10x3 damage. The pistol can be manually recharged if you're a loser, or just plugged into charging pads you can carry around for infinite ammo. If you use the trinket you get 1 energy back every 3 seconds to every single device in your inventory so you can just have two energy pistols and never have to worry about accuracy or ammo or anything ever again.
