It has a fun primary gameplay loop. The bullet-hell-style combat system adapted insanely well to the turn-based RPG formula. Plus there is a lot of novelty and creativity constantly thrown at you with how it's executed fight-to-fight. I think out of all games in Earthboud's legacy, Undertale has the best combat system. It's much better than the combat system of Earthboud itself. It's one of the components that made the game so insanely successful. Nobody would care that the writing and the music is good, if they had to do boring tedious battles in RPGMaker battle system #14324. It would get insanely boring very quick.

What I don’t understand is how it’s obviously inspired by earthbound but the quirkiness of earthbound comes through while both deltarune and Undertale feel forced in a performative tumblr way, I never felt a sense of wonder or curiosity about the world playing those games as I did with Earthbound or even Yume Nikki. Omori is better in that western respect by the understanding that it’s a traumatized child’s fantasy to get away from his guilt, Undertale and deltarune just feel like video games instead of unique worlds.

Gameplay like others said is solid. The story has some interesting twists and turns but isn't excessively complicated. Pacing of the game respects your time and you can complete it in a few hours. You'll love or hate some characters but they're all well-written and consistent. The soundtrack is phenomenal.

The early parts were fairly childish and light-hearted and the later parts got more and more fucked up and added context to the earlier parts to change how you perceived them. Deltarune is using the same formula and is probably going to be much more serious than Undertale was by the end of it, which will make people appreciate the light-hearted beginnings more the same way one misses the innocence of their childhood.

I liked Undertale but the first chapter of Deltarune clicked with me more. It reminded me of playing Mario RPGs as a kid. Dunno it's hard to explain but it has the same charm, and fucking incredible music on top of that.
