My dad only bothered paying attention to my vidya once. He saw me replaying MGS2 and wanted to try. He ended up playing though the entire thing, but skipped every single cutscene and codec call and just told me to sum up what was happening at that point in the story. Never touched a video game ever again afterwards.

He did think GTA was a bit too much when we showed him it (I think it was 3 or Vice City). Not really offended, my dad isn't sensitive about things, he just thought it was a little sick watching us murder hookers I guess. He liked Metal Gear Solid a lot when we showed him, though he still jokes about the name "Revolver Ocelot".
He used to play a few games back on NES and Sega Genesis. He was obsessed with Super Mario Bros. for a bit when it was new, and Road Rash II was one of his favorites. Sometimes he played GI Joe: The Atlantis Factor (underrated game). I tried getting him to try some SNES games I liked, RPGs and stuff, and he wasn't that into them but was a cool dad and played them with me anyway. In hindsight I feel a little embarrassed trying to get him into stuff that obviously isn't his thing, but I have happy memories of him playing those games with me.
I should set up Road Rash again and play it with him sometime.

My dad is the one who introduced me to vidya
My first console was a hand-me-down SNES with DKC, Jurassic Park, and Aladdin
We played through Halo CE and Halo 2 together
He kicked my ass at literally every sports game he would buy, Golf, Football, fucking Tennis, Racing games, etc.
I got him the Xbox edition of Half Life 2 for his birthday once, though I don't think he ever actually played it.
He was, and still is, really into Splinter Cell. Went to visit him once recently and he was playing Lost Planet on PS3.
When I played the classic Mario games for the first time, he watched and laughed at how much I sucked at them.
When Halo 4 came out, he just came to my room and watched me play for a bit, not in an "are ya winnin' son?" kind of way, but in a "huh. So this is what Halo looks like now, eh?" way
He's pretty cool
But he also once threw my PS2 off of a 10 foot drop because he was pissed at me for not cleaning my room once, so, you know. Take the good with the bad.
Which just makes me think of how much more fragile technology is now than it used to be, because that PS2 was not any worse for wear after that, it worked just fine.

unironically proud that he beat the first nu-god of war game without lowering the difficulty to story mode. He's 100%ing it too, for some reason. He was gonna play RDR2 as well but some fuckin actual aspie at work decided to just start loudly talking about spoilers and spoiled basically the whole game for everyone in the break room. They've since ostracized the retard for ruining their favorite hunting simulator.

My little brother and me played a demo of some PS2 mob game. One of the first Mafias maybe? I think it was set in London, and it had the typical drive-and-shoot gameplay.
Anyway, we found out that you can shoot the motorblock of cars and make them burn; the people inside the car would then come out, burning too.
Our dad saw this and he straight went to the console, opened the tray, took out the disc and broke it in half.
He usually didn't mind violence in vidya or film and tv, he also enjoys guns; I think this was just some kind of short where he thought he had to "parent" or something.
Also that one time he sent us to bed earlier because he didn't want us to watch Silence of the Lambs. I actually didn't care for it at all, I wanted to watch Saving Private Ryan which ran on another channel (and THAT he didn't mind), but I *could* have switched channels, so the tv stayed OFF.

I showed him BattleTech about 10 years ago and now its all he ever asks about, he came to visit recently and saw me playing Fire Emblem Engage watched me for a bit and asked if I still play "that mech game" (he was talking about BattleTech). I think he is just embarrassed that his kid plays weeb shit. Nah, he just had anger issues. Thankfully not the physically abusive kind, but the man tended to let anger get the better of his judgment from time to time. After the fact, my mom told me that he was SUPPOSED to just take it away and hide it from me until my room was clean, but instead he took it, went outside, and threw it off of our porch. She was very pissed at him afterward.
He chilled out a lot as he got older and I haven't seen him angry basically since I became an adult.

Then again most of the games I had were pretty kid-friendly. GTA was the more offensive one but even then I never heard him say anything about it.

When I had my Wii on my room he smashed the Wii remote against the corner of my chair and when I told him to be careful (mostly because those things aren't cheap and I'd have to buy a new one) he got real pissy about it.
The other time was when I got a racing SIM wheel to play GT Sport with and he was curious about it and I asked if he wanted to try something and he wanted to do rally and crashed the car everywhere. I also remember letting him play some Mafia 2 because of the old cars and he proceeded to do the same thing, crash them and run over people.

For whatever reason despite having a decent library of physical PC games I never saw my dad play them while he was around. I only found out recently that he still had them stashed away in his house.
What I hate more is that he forgot to take his older games and left them behind in the old house because he stopped paying rent and was forced out to live back with my mom. I could have had a sizable library of retro games early on in my life due to how much I like playing them yet all of that did not happen because he refused to show me his games. It isn't even like is against me playing them; he never warned me about violence or sex with the games I'm playing. I learned from my mom to watch out for pedophiles on the internet. He was an avid gamer in the 80's and 90's yet I still don't understand why he barely showed himself showing interest in the games he played or purchased.
Nowadays work consumes his life. He does still play games but only capeshit on his PS4 or mobile games. What a fall from grace, he will always be my dad but I'm not sure if he'll pursue our hobbies once he retires. He has constant mood swings so I am slowly awaiting the worst for when that time comes.

He played like 2-3 hours of my pokemon red to see what the hype was about. Absolutely nothing else. He's just an outdoorsy guy who autisticly only listens to Gordon Lightfoot on repeat.
>mom
Used to play on her atari and went to the arcade a bunch to play genx vidya like pacman and galaga.
Played browser games like on popcap.com quite a lot.
Wouldn't let me get an n64. Her brother got me a gameboy though.
She played Diablo2 until nightmare act2, then got filtered because bowazon fucking sucks without amazing gear.
Played a little mario kart double dash with me.
She upgraded the home windowsXP machine from 0.5 to1.5 gb. And later helped me do research on directx and upgrading that shitty pc with an ati radeon AGP graphics card so I could play bioshock.
Would watch me play vidya sometimes. Once I was playing oblivion, i killed some bandit and quickly click click clicked all the armor off her corpse.
She busts out laughing "Dang son, really taking the kitchen sink huh?"
Apparently she got onto a fallout 4 phase for a bit and asked me to keep all my bottlecaps for her for some project. Just like everything she does, she gets big ideas and never follows through.

I don't think he ever paid much attention to what I was actually playing. He used to game when he was younger but by the time I was little he'd basically completely given games up with maybe the very occasional racing sim / rts. It's a shame because I would've liked to have had gaming as something to bond with him over. Oh well, he's perfectly entitled to have his own interests.

I once showed my dad a trailer for games including Duke 3D (forgetting to preview it first), and it quickly flashed the part with the stripper tipping... and his harsh critique of it was "a christian didn't make this." He would have been uncomfortable if I had tried showing him Doom, for sure. But he was fine with Descent because it's just robots.

Yeah. He didn't like them. Thought they were already waste of time. He looked at games that I played, like Sonic, Kid Chameleon and ToeJam & Earl and thought they were lame.
That was the way it was until he tried out URBAN STRIKE at the video game store.
Then he changed his mind and thought some games were cool

My dad has a degenerative eye disease which makes playing games extremely difficult, if not impossible.
The last game he ever touched was The Thing on PS2, which was too dark for him to play, so he gave it to me (I was about 10 years old at the time).
He's come in on me playing all kinds of shit and I don't think it's ever bothered him.

I love this post.
It perfectly describes the mentality and ego of 90% of all boomers.
If they're not on top at all times, then you're just a cunt and not worth dealing with.
They don't argue, they escalate until you either back down or are beaten down.
Which is fine when you're ten or 13, not so easy for them when you're 17 and finally snap, breaking his nose after one too many slaps.
But then you're "dangerous" and need to be excluded from the household forevermore.
Fuck me, it's been three years and I'm STILL mad about it.

My dad is a musician, he teaches and plays gigs regularly to this day. Back then in his hayday he played shows, partied and cheated constantly, but he was an all around good guy, just wasn't cut out to be a father or husband. I still have great memories though on the rare occasions I got to see him. After a show he'd come home at like 3 or 4AM with whataburger and a bottle of liquor and play Hitman Blood Money, Samurai Western, or Vice City while I watched and ate half his burger, good times. We still talk and hang out but he's way more of a friend than a father to me and while I wish things could have been different there's really no use holding a grudge when we're both independent adults now.

He was a huge fan of racing games on PC, so much so that he went as far as to buy a steering wheel with a set of pedals too. I don't remember much aside from that time he bought me a PS2 and was amazed at Gran Turismo 4's graphics. I never shared his passion for cars, but I can see now that he tried to instill that in me by teaching me about parts and going to see some events like Dakar which took place in my country twice.

My dad was an actual baby boomer who unironically thought all videogames should be played with a flight stick or the keyboard. He was always confused by controllers and played Commander Keen on a sidewinder pro. My earliest videogame memories were Treasure Trap, Commander Keen, and Star Wars Rebel Assault 2. All with a joystick. We had an NES and SNES as well but he never touched them. One time my brother got some flight sim game from EB games and my dad freaked out because the pilot used swear words. He returned the game and chewed the guy out at the counter for selling it to my brother. I think it was rated K-A and I remember the game store employee just being incredibly confused. Good times.
