NGL mature themes is one of FF's big draws compared to other classic JRPGs. I played through XI as my first DQ, and that game did not mature in any aspect, except possibly graphics. The gameplay is grindy, with no innovation in combat for decades, the characters are one dimensional, the story is childish and predictable. I mean, some might see it as a plus, that the series preserved itself, unlike later FF games. But I don't.
Anyway, the JRPG series rivalry aside, I must admit, japs are really good at creating tearjerker moments in their games. And I honestly enjoy those.

Persona 4 is a game that didn't make me cry when I first played it but the ending did on replays many years later.
