Hot take: There's so much good music in games that it's really really hard to objectively make a list like this objectively without also considering the games in question as part of your bias and downright impossible to actually order them from best to worst at the same time.
Everyone's list is going to be vastly different because people have wildly different ideas of what music is good.

Yeah. It's ironic cause orchestral music is supposed to be captivating enough that you would attend concerts to listen to it performed as a main event in its own right. But that's the issue isn't it? You can't have the music upstaging the game itself. So they tone it down until it's basically just mood music. Neutered orchestral music might as well be ambient noise.

No I'm saying you had 20 different songs from an array of different games and you picked two songs from the same game. Not by chance, but because that game in particular is one you've played a lot and so the songs are just part of your nostalgia for that game. You don't have any objective view of them and that's fine, but the songs were not anything special.

Catchy tunes > pompous, overblown synth orchestra. Tens of millions of people can instantly recognize almost any Ocarina of Time track after a few bars are played, and can hum and whistle the tune from memory. That's the power of strong melody. Simple but memorable melodies are a mark of genius in the music world. That's why whenever one is created it tends to be sampled and reused by lesser artists for generations. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is a good example. That's not even the original name of that melody, it's been used for centuries and its appeal has not waned one iota in all that time because its melody is just that good.

You act like a memorable melody and an orchestra are somehow mutually exclusive. In music theory terms and compositionally speaking, music is all the same. The only variable is the instruments used. Dancing Mad and One-Winged Angel have memorable chord progressions and motifs too. e33 has good music, but I haven't heard anything that would classify it as great music, it's basically the same stuff you see from people on youtube making renfaire-esque music based on other tunes

Understandable, because most of the new stuff has ambient and easy to forget tunes instead of the melodious catchy music we used to have...
Is it because of limitations? Budgeting? Lack of passion?
