I played the game (Rare on /v/, I know) and they were far from souless. Levels had tons of non-Fractones that were bursting with the kind of character you would expected, like the scrapper Monkeys, the Ze-Brah's, the Elephant stormwatchers, etc. Void Co has more soul than the old Kremlings ever did and even K. Rool was brought back when he was the only one with a real personality, which they made even crazier than before.
Fractones were literally walking rocks with eyes because they were about the game mechanics. You could tear up materials in the game but might run out of a rare material you needed for a puzzle in the area so they put in Fractones, living chunks of land who endlessly regenerate even if you break them. Boom gameplay solved with natural sources of resources, but instead of having them be some generic gameplay infinite resource pile they made them into silly little guys who talk about the puzzles and build the world.
Is the board dedicated to video games so bad at game design they don't see how simple but functional that is for the game they're from?
