This is unironically the best fucking take. SH3 biggest allure and achievement is just how utterly VISCERAL and MORBID its horror is, it DEMANDS you conquer your fear just to have the chance to glimpse at the utterly bizarre, infernal and alien environments and enemies it creates. You can basically skip every single cutscene in 3 and come out of the experience still feeling like the game's a solid 8/10, but you can't do the same for 2.

Absolutely. It goes a bit too far in a few places (final areas in hospital are just way too much lol) but I played it before 2, and 2's otherworld is just so fucking tame in comparison. It gets like 20% more moldy. 1 and 3 both have a much stronger turn from the normal world being bleary and lonely and then the otherworld being "oh god oh god what the fuck is that".

It's about rebirth and birth, not quite abortion.

Alessa was born into a miserable life destined to be used in a weird demon summoning ritual and killed by it (in one way or another).
Part of her genuinely believes in the cult's goals and wants to make her mom happy, but the other part is disgusted by this and wants to stop the demon from being born at all costs.
These are the two parts of Alessa's soul in Silent Hill 1: Alessa (inside her near-comatose body) and Cheryl (who had been Harry's daughter until returning to Silent Hill).

In SH3, Heather is told over and over by the entire cast (except Harry) to do things in accordance with her birthright and destiny or whatever. Against her will, Claudia has used black magic to impregnate Heather with the same demon she had all those years ago.
Railroaded back into her destiny, Heather decides that what she really wants is to Cheryl, Harry Mason's daughter.

In Silent Hill 1, everyone remarks how all the people have vanished. Not just moved out, not turned into monsters, but vanished. The only "humans" besides the main cast are monsters that take the form of nurses/doctors controlled by parasites, and when the game ended all the humans came back into existence along with the town.
In Silent Hill 3, Douglas makes a reference to a missing person's case in Silent Hill but he never mentions that the entire town's population vanished without a trace.

Alessa in SH1 is physically incapable of moving due to her injuries and Dahlia had been keeping her in an endless nightmare so that her psychic cries of pain beckoned Cheryl back to Silent Hill.

It's possible the enemy the kills Harry and later patrols the final areas was actually a cultist who was warped and twisted through hate/murder and the demon's influence into what we see; but at that point they don't just "look like monster," they are monsters.

I think this was just how Alessa was used in a standard way by Dahlia and the cult, to contact the demon-god and speak with it. Dahlia used her affection as a bargaining chip to goad Alessa into it, promising that it would make her and everyone else happy, but Alessa still refused.

Alessa's next suggestion is what triggers Dahlia to come up with the plan that begins the entire series:

Either way, whatever the fight was originally about, it wasn't the ritual itself. At least not directly.
