Animals mate like clockwork, I'd imagine this trait triggers when a cycle is delayed or several cycles are missed leading to a buildup of some kind of hormone that triggers it. We have to remember that pretty much all animal sex is rape so it's not like the female is going to avoid impregnation when there's a healthy population around.

Yeah sure but most species don't just have a back-up plan that can lead to creating the next generation. Some have fun tricks, like how coyotes have larger litters if a lot of them get killed.
But this begs the question of "Why don't they just do this all the time?" There's obviously an advantage to having a regular male and female create young, otherwise the species would just be female only and pop out babies by themselves all the time. So what's the drawback? The reason why I say the downside may not matter is because there is tonnes of shit in nature that isn't "perfect". For example dragonflies have less inefficient 4-wing structures whereas flies have a large 2-wing and small 2-wing structure that gives vastly superior mobility.
