Don't skip backstory/life decisions when starting a run, figure out what you get out of each choice, every character can get dash depending on what you pick at the start and it's one of the strongest abilities in the game plus a lot of quality of life since it cuts a shitton of travel time. In terms of difficulty of each character it's pretty much: thief > knight > priest > barbarian so I'd recommend playing one of the 1st 2, but you will play all of them eventually so don't worry

Figure out how to save, then just explore and experiment with everything you can find, game might seem unfair as fuck at the start but once you start figure out shit it is not that bad, almost all fights have a strategy you can follow to get out without getting completely fucked or impaired for the rest of the run.

Use guard, some NPC will tell you when to use it indirectly, just keep experimenting and you will get what I mean with this.

Play on the 1st difficulty, 2nd difficulty is kind of redundant and just very annoying until you know what you are doing.

You shouldn't have much trouble in BS1. BS2 is going to be a much greater test of your IQ, but even then it's still possible to piece together what you need for the endgame with enough time and effort. Both games come with hint files if you're stuck on how to get the endings however, so it's a fucking non-issue in the first place.
