Had this downloaded and played some today for the first time in years. Found a ramp I could use to land on the tram rail, wound up on a rooftop where I got a flamethrower and a hidden package, then navigate this game's awful jumping to leap on a roof vent to get back on the tracks and run back to the station so I wouldn't have to just jump off the building and risk killing myself. All in the first thirty minutes of the game. Had a good time, seems like a great game to play in pieces, mission by mission, or just fuck around till you're bored. I like how compact it is compared to the newer games, feels more like a video game level extrapolated into a town as opposed to a town retrofit into a video game.

SA falls off when you have to deal with catalina's shit and then get to san fierro. When SA is boyz in the hood and then CJ being exiled to bumfuckville is the best part of the game. my feelings as to why ultimately boil down to when CJ is just some street thug is when he is most interesting. The increase in scope SF and later LV bring (yeah yeah gotta do ocean's eleven in not-vegas) dilute this experience for me. The return to LS is decent (apart from gang wars because that is poorly done) because we go back to thug CJ now deciding to unfuck shit rather than just go with the flow the rest of GSF (well, mainly sweet) dictate.

It tickles me how the pile of magazines you get in your portland safehouse for finishing the el burro mission is both a reference to his name, british slag and a bong children's TV show that (by now) hasn't been broadcast for 70-80 years. The fact that playing on ps2 also makes it nearly impossible to see because of the resolution unless you stand real close and use a sniper to zoom in is one of those many little things that turn up in rockstar games.

GTA3 is fucking dogshit
>framerate, performance, and pop-in are horrible
>pressure sensitive X to drive is obnoxious, have to constantly mash it in fully for top speed
>camera controls are so fucking bad. forced inverted for first person, can only see directly in front of you and cannot pan the camera at all while moving or driving; can only do jarring instant switches to sideview/rearview
>gun controls are the worst I've ever seen. lockon is so inconsistent and you just stand there like a beanpole spamming your gun. can't aim, can't take cover, can barely move, can't look around without fucking up your aim
>can only driveby with one weapon and only when aiming left/right
>mute protagonist means zero conversations in the car
>police are extremely aggressive and will repeatedly spawn out of thin air and smash into you rendering any car destroyed in like 30 seconds
>police will just sprint up and open a car moving at 20mph, aim their gun at you for a nanosecond and you're instantly busted and lose all weapons
>no map in the menu at all (and many icons don't show up at all, only for a limited time, or only if you're very close)
>minimap is just awful. no way to manually control it and it constantly has jarring zooms way in and way out as your speed changes
>cars are so fragile, hit a traffic cone at 5 mph and your car starts smoking
>NPC drivers drive like absolute psychopaths, veering all over the road smashing into everything. of course, they're invincible, while you take 1-2 hits and can't drive straight
>missions are basic fetch quests and usually only a few minutes long
>hostile NPCs and police just disappear right in front of you when you reach a destination or finish a mission. You have hostiles shooting you, finish a mission and they instantly phase out of existence
Legitimately one of the worst games I've ever played

I fucking love LCS and Toni is definitely an underrated protagonist, but I'll say it's different, story-wise and atmosphere-wise. Which one you prefer is up to you.
One undeniable good point towards LCS is the easier gameplay thanks to things from VC and SA.
>fucking bikes, really helps when you're in Shoreside Vale
>VC's selection of weapons
>SA's free aim
>fucking Slash TV, definitely one of the best side activities in all GTA history
