Are kids today priced out of modern gaming?
I'm a teacher and all of my students still play on PS4s, Nintendo Wiis, and the 3DS. Are home consoles too expensive for the modern family?

Those are hand me downs and thrift pickups
The modern family is content to give their kids a phone and a tablet (which they pretend is for school) and that is the extent kids get electronics at all these days

Kids today never experienced the graphics arms race like millennials did. 30 years ago graphics and hardware were super important and a huge selling point and basically if you didn't have the latest shit you were poor and fucking stupid. Kids today have grown up with "good enough" graphics since they were born. There's no real meaningful difference between a PS4 and PS5 game honestly, Spider-Man 2 having instant loading times compared to Spider-Man 1 really isn't that big of a deal, at the end of the game both games are incredibly similar.

How young are we talking? Because it's the parents that are being priced out if the kids aren't old enough to work

Price is probably a reasonable factor to assume, but I would assume the biggest culprit is the peer pressure in their age group to migrate to crap like Fortnite and Roblox and just never leave. If they have one platform that can access those, these kids aren't gonna be too concerned about keeping up with new hardware

im poor

>everything up through ps3 era is pretty much emulatable
>game pass has free trials and worst case scenario like $10 a month to go through a bunch of stuff
>free games are free
>steam sales
>piracy

only when its some game locked to consoles, not on pc, and not on game pass is it annoying.

I was thinking about this the other day, how the technological arms race was a major selling point back then and provided a means to introduce and talk about new games with people, like "ah man, you gotta see what they've come out with now." Now the medium has shifted more into gadgetry where it either compromises on the graphics aspect like Nintendo and hasn't had the same luster since the Wii, or with periphery purchases like VR that a lot of people don't want to add to the existing costs of the systems themselves, nor are they all that necessary or pivotal.

This just tells me that video games are going to be left in the dust soon, a relic of millennials as the television was to boomers. Why would kids give a fuck about video games if all they ever played is Roblox and phone slop? The knowledge is no longer getting passed down and the standards are inevitably lowered.

Parents made arguments about super nintendo and nes being basically the same thing and that paying for the new one was stupid. Well, nowadays that argument kinda holds water because graphics have stagnated. And not to mention the fact that most kids just play free to play games and mobile games that don't need demanding hardware in the first place.

In the past 10 years video game records have been constantly broken. Most sold game, most sold console, highest yearly earnings, highest concurrent players, highest subscription numbers, fastest selling this and that. Where have you been?

Idk but this is great. We get to shoe them the great games of yesteryear that are affordable ($0).
Real talk, I'm dating a Zoomer and other than Roblox most of her favorite games arent centralized to a console or platform, their all iphone games or flash games off coolmathgames and whatnot. Truly a versitile generation for gaming and who don't act high and mighty coming from 1st party devs or as console exclusives.

I disagree. It might be how youtube or streaming ate television cable. We'll still watch videos made to convey stories, but "tv shows" or series may evolve as a medium. Gaming is in that right now. Even if Stop Killing Games doesnt work the public more than ever is agknowladging what bullshit the companies are trying to pull.

Home platform vidya's simply returning to its roots of being a hobby for nerds with too much money and free time, as soon as it stops being profitable we'll go back to having more and more genuinely great passion projects made for the love of creation and sharing it with others.

Modern games aren't significantly better than "old" games from a couple generations ago so not only is it much cheaper but you'd be playing games which are at worst in line with a modern mobile game quality and at best exactly the same quality as a modern game

Production costs and development times have also risen in equal measure. The industry isn't exactly booming right now. We've seen layoffs, studio closures, deslistings in the same period. All the major companies are making remakes because anything else is too risky

Ps5/Switch 2 and even Steam games haven't come up with any ideas that revolutionizes any genre or game really, we're at a convergence with innovation in games right now. The most that has changed is that Visa and Mastercard are making Hgames and porn games (ontop of many many false positives in the horror genreand other graphic kinds of content) vanish from storefronts.

The problem is innovation requires tech we simply do not have yet, you can't exactly go further than "ultra-detailed ultra-realistic graphics" without the kind of hardware that can support something that's straight out of sci-fi, like truly open game that uses AI to create infinite possibilities for player interactivity, or fully immersive VR that'll work seamlessly with ALL the relevant senses.

I got each of my five nephews an xbox360 and a ps3. If they want something more then they can mow lawns and babysit or whatever. I'm not buying them shit, and I told my sisters not to buy them anything. They need to learn how to hustle like we did.

If you really wanna gauge how much gaming has shrunk, keep in mind that EVERYTHING here was a massive meteoric success

Seventh gen
>Nintendo sells 255 million consoles
>Sony sells 167 million consoles
>Microsoft sells 81 million consoles

Ninth gen
>Nintendo sells 152 million consoles
>Sony sells 75 million consoles
>Microsoft sells 29 million consoles

Yes. Consoles themselves are expensive and games are getting even more expensive. We're already at $70 and if the industry tries to follow Nintendo then they'll be $80 soon and if I asked for multiple $70-80 games as a kid then my parents would have told me to fuck off if it wasn't my birthday or Christmas. I'll also bet money that the PS6 and new Xbox will be $700 minimum. You already saw people defending the price with the PS5 Pro and I've even seen people start retroactively defending the $600 PS3. People are starting show they're alright at paying that much for a console and they'll definitely do it if they think they can get away with it.

I only agree to a degree with graphics and implimenting LLMs in gsmes in real time. There are many genres of games that could be improved on or even gimmickly tweaked for a fresh experience with mechanics. Not everything has been invented or tried yet, but it seems we're content with that. Donkey Kong Bananaza with destructable environments isnt the most creative thing on the planet but it sure seems to be the only thing relatively new going on. I heard Death Stranding 2 went full Ubisoft with connecting tower missions over your huge world you have to traverse.
