bs1 is a solid 6/10, it has its merits of being able to clear it fully without any leveling which is kinda funny, the heroines are nice and cute, some of the content that leads to some endings can be pretty cool, but other than that the dev didn't have much experience in his belt crafting a game according to his vision, so a good chunk of it is pretty mediocre
bs1 can be seen as the prelude to bs2, the dev's real magnum opus for now, it's better than bs1 by several magnitudes and I'd personally say it's one of the best rpgmaker games ever made
unfortunately due to bs1 leading directly into the events of bs2 it's not something you can skip since you'd be missing massive chunks of background information and many, many references

First cycle talking to people and strictly following the directions to find Alice
Second cycle wandering around trying to find out the cause, exploring places and dipping into SEN
Third+ bumrushing the fake dom bird who loses with tongue sticking out, then proceeding to covenant and give happy ends for everyone, getting the first spooky ending
Subsequent playthoughs going full ape in any way and form you want until you figure out how to cancel out of choices you really don't want to make. It helps a lot that big sis and her helpful snowmen straight out tell you.

If you are trying to save characters, I think the order is
Rush to the Goose, she is in the Ranch, if you have a mastery key you won't even need to fight a boss. Then go to the Abandoned Forest, don't take bread crumbs otherwise the twins will turn into demons, in this same scenario you can recruit Dorothy by doing her quest, outside of the house Sinner Wilt is part of the quest of the twins, then through the Sewers that is localized by the warehouse, there you need to kill Pied Piper otherwise he will kill later Elma, proceed to Rotten Burg, there you can check out the brothel to the top right and interact here with a prostitute Marianna( I think she doesn't turn as long you feed her enough ), move to the main house on the top left of Rotten Burg, pass through the fog and GO UPSTAIRS, otherwise Victoria that is here will suicide ( so yeah, you need to beat the boss ) if you go somewhere else. After saving Victoria, move above to Fort Ivern, you can get Jeanne ashes (important) where she got killed, defeat the boss area, now you go back to Rotten Burg(everyone in the brothel will have turned) and below the bonfire is Elma shop, interact and purchase the Match for Sinner Wilt, leave, go back and move to kill her demonic mother. Now with Pied Piper dead she will go to the Holy Forest, now you can go to Sinner Wilt ( which leads to a boss fight) and you can feed both twins. From here, you will want to go to Sea of Trash and kill the kraken(important for Jeanne), by now Catherine might've spawned in the Holy Forest, go below to Graveyard Town Elixir and kill the cathedral boss(important), go right to the Skeleton Maze: here you will most likely find Catherine trapped and you can also find a NPC to revive Jeanne. Save both, go back to the cathedral, summon Jeanne and now you will get Catherine in the Holy Forest

I am now not sure which other characters I can save, but this is pretty much a most secure route to save initial characters

It's fun. There's a solid amount of build diversity and lots of different ways to become absolutely broken. There is also enough of a challenge that it doesn't feel pointless to figure out how to become a broken OP character since trying to unga your way through the game will, likely, be difficult for you. Too many games allow good build diversity but also just make it too easy to power through every encounter with 0 strategy (Pokemon is the best example here since you COULD do all sorts of cool shit but it's also way too easy to just solo everything with your starter).
I also think there's a really neat attempt at making Dark Souls into a turn based JRPG. It's cool seeing how EMMM decided to interpret/adapt the mechanics of Dark Souls into something that works in a JRPG.
