I felt the same way after playing Engage and wondered if Jade's popularity/desirability would have been better if people couldn't just reclass everyone to whatever class, so you learn to appreciate the tools you do have. Maybe more people would have been forced to try using her for her class bulk. Then again, most people don't like using Knights/Generals because they're low mobility, so perhaps in this case it helped Jade. it might be the reclassing means some characters don't get fucked because their class is bad in the game.

Engage, because of its design quirks, managed to make defense an almost useless stat, when it's been god tier in every other game. And Jade gets hit doubly bad with the suck-stick because armors are bad and she's balanced around a bad class with all that entails.
That said, reclassing actually saves her. She'd be fucking doomed if she couldn't get out of that shit class line. At least you can take her out of her purgatory, and then she's only like 15% worse than the "best" option anyway because most of unit performance is from the ring/skills/wepaon, it's almost not even a big deal.

Defense is crap in Engage, this is fact. It's good early on especially Louis, but it's quickly outstripped by the mounting attack stats of enemies and with the way enemies will just stop attacking you at 0 damage, it's not worth it to pump it too high with boosts.
The real killer is of course Bonded Shield. It's better to just ignore traditional tanking as a factor entirely and let your 10 def Mage knight sweep the map in full invincibility mode.

Actually, the opposite is true. You are way more likely to run into 0 damage ignores early on than later. Louis is already invisible to 4 enemies on his join map because of 0 damage. Add +1 DEF from Divinely Inspiring and that's another 4 enemies on the map he's no longer targeted by. Attack values do scale up quite rapidly, so it stops becoming as common. Engage's physical attack values are basically balanced so that they are always a threat to just about any unit. By late game, the weakest enemies with doubling-capable weapons have ~40 attack, while the strongest have just under 60. The DEF cap for general is 55, while GK's is 51. The next highest DEF caps after that are 35, shared between a few classes. So, even the weakest enemies always hit for damage against anything but potentially a General/GK, who are still vulnerable to the strongest. That's not even considering special weapons like smashers either.

Nintendo wants to release an improved version of the game but now they have to do it from the ground up. I'm against adding skill to AS in the first place though as high skill classes usually have high speed as well, making them dab on fighters, pirates, and other low AS classes even more.

The DLC is a separate campaign with its own save files.
The characters become playable on the main game after you do several chapters so like Hapi becomes playable after you do the first 2 DLC maps.
