It's garbage that tries to unironically be a "earthbound-inspired quirky RPG about depression" except the dev forgot to have fun gameplay so all you have is a shitty story about an autistic manchild being an autistic manchild, and the dev similarly being an autistic manchild when people criticize his shit game, hiding behind the "IT IS LE ART" excuse

It deeply annoys me how YIIK is supposed to be a period piece set in 1999, yet Alex Yiik and his friends are all dressed like 2010's hipsters. One character literally calls himself a scene kid, when those literally did not exist in 1999.

The funny thing is that the game states 1999, but it's because the world is broken, so it's not exactly 1999. Because nobody plays the game, people go on about scene kids in 1999.

Yeah, but the problem is that it becomes a convenient excuse for every problem a player might have with the game and its' narrative, which then spins around to "Why should I engage with the game if it is going to lie to me?". If you bring up a literary work that does that, I will point out that those have layers to them, where the surface layer can still be enjoyable.

Ftfy. YIIK is beyond miserable as a story, and the quirky scenes really feel like a pure obligation. It should have been a more serious, text-based adventure or a straight up VN. The RPG elements and the quirky Earthbound aspects are so forced and muddy the actual vision of the game.

One last time dipshit:
It doesn't matter what the sub-text actually is if the text or sub-text isn't engaging to begin with. I have read books where the unreliable narrator and meta-narrative trope is used well and guess what: They only work because the text AND sub-text is engaging to begin with.

Alex Yiik's only goal in life is to have sex, which would be fine if the character was 13 years old but he's a grown adult, so it makes him completely unrelatable and unlikable. He feels like he should genuinely be on the sex offenders registry and probably be chemically castrated.

I have no idea why someone would make this guy the main character of this game. He could have literally taken any other character, made them the main character and it would have been much better.

It's also very weird narratively because Alex is supposed to more or less be god. He's shown to have the power to destroy entire realities. And yet he cant get a girlfriend. That's a weird god.

So this one line justifies all of them, this one line that gets paid off later about how his reality didn't have monsters and other RPG shit in it?
Anonymous No.718448690
I get that the author clearly wanted the world to be fucked up and not make sense because reality was breaking. The issue with this is that it doesn't follow any logic. The fucked up parts are completely random things that have nothing to do with each other. There's no pattern or design to follow. It would have been interesting if, as the game went on, more and more elements of the world and characters would change. Instead, there's just random shit fucked up here and there until it all fucks up at the end. It doesn't feel like reality is breaking, it just feels like the setting is inconsistent.

What makes Yiik so interesting is the main character. Seeing a typical anime harem wish fulfillment plot told from the perspective of some ugly ass bastard with aspergers is quite a unique concept. Sexually harasses and fumbles with a bunch of different women who all fall for him, treating his male friends like shit but they still look up to him, this hipster tard having the power to destroy or create universes, that's fucking hilarious. Essentially I think Simon/Simone is connected to the girl Alex knew after Michael and his family left to Canada after Alex ruined Michael's chances with Allison.
It sounds stupid but hear me out, since it seems Michael was gone before they left for Canada it's possible they ended up coming back to their old home later and living there again.
There's also the fact Simone seems to be a female especially with them mentioning how they had a dream where they were making out with Alex's dad meaning, they're a part of the essentia which is just all the kinds of women Alex is into.

I'll elaborate further in another post I'm currently rereading Simone's logs again.

indeed, that's the twist
alex and by extension the player is under the assumption that supernatural has intruded upon his regular life, with androids and monsters and RPG battles, and he just sorta accepts it as a videogame adventure just like the player, because that's what games generally are
the scene during the morning 31st of december is the big reveal, alex realizing just how broken the reality is (which essentia explicitly confirms), after thinking about how he drifted apart from michael and his parents' jobs and the general wackyness of the story so far
of course, that doesn't technically oppose the literal supernatural stuff with soulspace and alternate dimensions, which is just another sign of how confusing the game is

The fact that one of Simone's emails talks about how trauma leads to misremembering or masking events leads me to think Simone could be a girl, especially how Alex in the story seems to substitute other people for someone even if they're completely different.

It's not like The Room or some shit where it's just incompetent and shit top to bottom and is funny for that reason but the type of thing where it's shittiness is entertaining but there's enough genuinely interesting ideas to keep you hooked. yiik has taught me that if you're gonna do a story that depends on closer analysis to fully understand what's going on, you need to earn the trust of the audience and prove that you aren't a hack. and if your work is full of uninteresting characters and you bury your hints in walls of boring, irrelevant text and redundant narration, then most people will not feel the need to analyze anything because they'll simply assume you're an idiot. and that doesn't mean they got filtered, you're just a hack and should stop writing.

most of the plot points yiik does have already been done in kafka on the shore and people actually like and analyze that book and its meanings and symbolism, which pretty much proves what i said. if you like yiik's ideas, just read some Murakami novels
Anonymous No.718472852 >>718473187

Nta but if you were an English teacher would you use this logic on high schoolers reading an assigned book? Like if they all wrote in their essays on Kafka on the Shore β€œyeah it was gay and boring so I don’t care about the themes and structure more like β€˜Kafka on the Snore lmao’” this would be a totally valid interpretation A+? Anonymous No.718473187 >>718474002

its funny you say that because i studied to be an english teacher in my youth but i dropped out cause i hated the bureaucracy.

as for your question it heavily depends on all kinds of factors, like is this an essay about what the student thought about the book? if they can prove they at least read the shitting thing then yes, they wouldnt fail. if its about themes, then if they can prove they understand what its going for even if they didnt like it, yes, they wouldnt fair.

and thats what yiik is for me. i understand what its doing, i understand its themes and i actually have defended it in these threads sometimes, but it is poorly written.
Anonymous No.718474002 >>718474565

This logic doesn’t really make sense to me, you’re saying it’s poorly written because people don’t want to understand it, and you cite Kafka as an example of something people want to understand (and therefore it’s better written). You’re arguing a logical structure where writing quality is just a matter of group consensus rather than actually based on anything.
Anonymous No.718474565 >>718475436

Let me explain it for you so any dunce can understand it: Yiik has interesting ideas and themes but it's poorly written. Redundant narration, dull and uninteresting characters, terrible pacing and walls of unnecessary text galore. That means people are less likely to want to analyze and engage with the work and attribute flaws to it that the work itself actually addresses, like the constant complaints about Yiik's anachronisms. These are definitely intentional and serve as a clue as to the game's themes, but people aren't gonna analyze them further when the game's writing is stuffed to the brim with egregious flaws. Part of that is on the audience, but Yiik definitely did a poor job getting its audience to engage with it in the first place.

Most of the vanilla game's plot points are ripped straight out of Kafka on the Shore anyway, a book people actually like, so that proves that yes, Yiik's ideas could have been handled in a way that engages people and make them want to analyze the work. Call it a homage, plagiarism, I don't care. The ideas are still novel for a game, it just didn't stick the landing. I think IV proves they're capable of doing much better, because the NG+ is pretty good.

Your writing criticisms boil down to β€œit’s too long”, Yiik does not really have redundant scenes. Disliking the characters is again just a complaint not really a critique, a character can be both likable and poorly written and vice versa. I have complaints about Yiik’s themes so I’m not trying to be overly defensive, like there’s a part where Chondra complains about β€œnihilism” and it’s actually hedonism and Andrew puts a NPC crying because he knows they’re different but still wants to bitch about his own definition, but on the whole I think people are nitpicking and making up their own criteria instead of judging it on what it actually is

The plot in general is just a fucking mess and it doesn't help that it's buried beneath unnecessarily bloated dialogue and pointless shit that you're forced to listen to that has absolutely no bearing on anything like that one faggot's lengthy story about how he came across some tea leaves.
That and I imagine a lot of people dropped it early on because of just how terrible the gameplay is. Dungeon designs are generally pretty awful, enemy variety is garbage (there's only a handful of different enemy types and the dev was too lazy to even create unique monsters for most dungeons so even in dungeons you're just encountering the same damn enemies you encounter in the overworld), and progression is just fucking shit (when you're literally telling the player to go grind until you hit a certain level, you've completely failed as a dev. You put in side quests and shit to help the player level up SPECIFICALLY so they don't just have to wander around trying to hit random encounters to grind for XP).
I still think the dev is a retard for clutching this dumpster fire like it's his precious baby instead of just starting fresh with a new game. Just like nobody cares about Rory's stupid dead sister, nobody cares about the dev's stupid dead game.

>Alex Yiik's only goal in life is to have sex, which would be fine if the character was 13 years old but he's a grown adult, so it makes him completely unrelatable and unlikable.

>(there's only a handful of different enemy types and the dev was too lazy to even create unique monsters for most dungeons so even in dungeons you're just encountering the same damn enemies you encounter in the overworld

i know about the tower. everyone knows about the tower. i know you can glitch outside of the boundaries to get to it. i know it says "???" and you can't open it. i know that it leads to either the old essentia tutorial or the old frankton area depending on which "key" you have in your game's save data.

>Chondra, when I went and lived all of my parallel lives I was born into different worlds and circumstances. Yet in all of them, black people accounted for 52% of all murder statistics, despite making up 13% of the population. You're all intentionally not seeing it! It's like Per Capita is an alien concept, and only I'M actually noticing!

We explicitly see older Alex and learn that he lives in 2016 and is just a manchild creating a fictional reality where he lives in 1999. It's a central part of the game.

I agree but only because YIIK is worse and you actually have to play through it which is far, far more tedious and drawn out. A bad movie is far easier to stomach than a bad game.

In YIIK multiple realities exist. Parallel universes, and that kind of shit.
