This is what I wanted to say. The strongest gatekeeping is when the game itself keeps people out. There's a reason that 4chan doesn't play certain games, and it's because those games just crush stupid people and cowards. There happens to be an entire website full of those people.

Fighting games are a good example. What filtered me from fighting games is that there's no community in my country. The FGC was only alive in America, and they kept fighting games alive. There's like no reason for people in other countries to care.

It does, but you have to be adamant about it. It's too easy for people to start softening and letting more people in though.
Part of the problem is that if something's gatekept TOO much, then it dwindles over time as the oldfags leave and the newfags ignore it. This applies to basically everything, ranging from games to websites to politics.
