it's not bad Anon, is this one of your first forts? One of the tips i'd give is make hallways two wide where you can, otherwise dorfs have to climb over each other and it slows 'em down

I don't understand why so many players insist on giving individual dorfs those 1x3 broom closets for living. Underground space is literally for free, and besides, making bigger and expensive rooms provides more mining experience, more engraving experience, more stones for masons and crafters to work with, and your lads constantly have happy thoughts from admiring their masterpiece empty bookshelves and penis engravings. And on top of that, designing more elaborate and luxurious living quarters is simply fun.

I typically designate an entire layer deep enough to not be bothered by noise into 5x5 rooms. When you do it all at once it's a lot less hassle. You do 5xn where n is the width of the layer times how many fit in the height of the layer, then remove designation to cut them into 5x5, add doors to an entire column of rooms at once and remove the extra designations a row at a time. Then you just fix up the corridors leading to the rooms and you're done. From the very start designate the whole thing at second to lowest priority so miners will work on whatever is more important first by default and wall off sections with lowest priority designations so it gets worked on a section at a time.

I just explained how the mining is designated efficiently to make a layer's worth of rooms in far less designations than the amount of rooms. If you mean setting up the mined rooms as rooms, that's the same effort regardless of the size of the room.

Damn you must not watch any tutorials and raw dogging the game completely to have such low efficiency.
I never understood why people make such tiny fucking bedrooms for the dwarves that do everything for them.
>doesn't care about the 1 tile fuckery of making dwarves climb over each other.
What a shit god.

I'm trying out that tutorial girl's strategy of the massive trench. Only problem I've had with it is now my dwarves want all those stones so I need more wheelbarrows and stockpiles because they keep hauling this shit by hand.
No I'm not going to forbid all that delicious stone.
I've been playing for years and only last week did I learn overhangs need to be 2 tiles off the ground to truly be unclimbable. Guess I'm lucky no legendary climber has ever jumped that high yet.
I've got fortifications on top of my walls and still working on putting the roof on. Just started laying down traps.

You start off with 7 Dwarves and a wagon of supplies to last a while until you can set everything up. You can issue commands, and the appropriate dwarves will do the task, and in certain circumstances you can even make sure it's a specific dwarf, but you can't control any of them directly. (Unless you're playing an older version with Adventure Mode)
You can carve out the earth and build structures, but you can only view everything top down, one layer at a time.
Once you can make head or tails of the alphabet soup on your screen, it only takes a little more imagination to really see everything.

games like dwarf fortress can't do multicore because it desynchs the timing on various interactions that need to be all part of the same thread.
the timing on them is just too tight.
same shit with C:DDA
gonna steal someone else's words here to blogpost:

>Multithreading only really works in games that have elements that can be ran independently from other elements. A physics engine is usually a single thread, because it almost always requires data before the next piece of calculated. Multithreading for a single element can only really be done if both threads can independently calculate whatever it is need without invalidating the other thread(ignoring stuff like branch prediction).
>A lot of multithreaded games now run in a high amount of threads where each element has one or more threads, this is how load is usually evenly distributed on these games. However this can usually lead to a symptom called "context switching" where heavier threads running on the same core as others can ultimately delay others, causing immediate frame drops or freezing. This is why this has to be done conservatively.
>Now Dwarf Fortress isn't a game you can easily multithread, and where multithreading will cause massive performance improvements(read it won't). The cost far outweighs the benefits.
>The reason is that the way DF history and progression works is that it requires every single piece of data being before the next piece of data can be executed. You can see this effect heavily during procedural generation. This is usually the case for any simulator-type game. Although you see stuff like graphics being executed on a different thread in some of these games nowadays, but DF is hardly a graphically intense game.
Anonymous No.718556425 >>718556785 >>718557468
>>718556291
to put this in TLDR:
games like DF have to simulate time passing constantly and do a bunch of calculations for things that interact within that time.
that is where 95% of all the processing for the entire game is.
its basically one big physics engine, and physics engines pretty much need to run on a single thread for the same reason.

Please stop being a fucking retard. There is no inherent sequential nature to updating many things across many cells all in one tick. If the game needs to calculate temperature change in every cell for example, it doesn't need to be done in a specific order.
The problem with multithreading is in preventing multiple threads from editing the same data at the same time. This is a solvable problem, but a harder one, which Toady wasn't capable of.
>>718556885

Pathfinding is a resource intensive process, and always will be to an extent by simple virtue of what is necessary to accomplish it. It is hard to get around that at all let alone for someone that isn't an actual programmer. And to make matters worse the game started life back when single core CPUs were the norm. As such everything was built around a sequential computational process. Which means to even take advantage of modern CPUs they have to reorganise what can be done side by side and what can't, and there is enough stuff in the game that directly interacts with other stuff that it becomes limited in what can be done like that anyway. It is definitely getting better and the new guy they have working on unfucking the clusterfuck seems to know what he is doing, but I imagine that Toady is probably a development bottleneck regardless of how good the other guy might be.

It depends. You are largely right but there is an argument that can be made that they can still chop up the computation for a lot of it to make it quick and just make it do multiple passes until finalised as a single tick. It might not end up as quick as modern multi-core processing that is designed to work side by side but as long as it is quicker than relying on single sequence processing then it is a net gain.

Yes, the game was built around sequential tasks, but multithreading many different pathfinding tasks is not something groundbreaking and not something that'd have been novel and unique even in the late 00's. Not being able to update and fix that code in literal decades is also not really excusable.

Non-meme answer is that there is already too much other stuff competing for attention to be unfucked first. Pathfinding currently works even if sub-optimal in design. Other stuff doesn't and thus has priority to be fixed up. And realistically something as complicated as pathfinding optimisation can be a significant undertaking in itself, and really shouldn't be undertaken until they finalise other computational sequences and they know what can and cannot potentially be trimmed out of it.

Yes. There is still a significant amount of 'minor' stuff that has gone unfixed for a long long time now. Some of it got addressed as part of Steam release and patching but overall there is plenty of outstanding. Going off the patch notes the priority seems to be getting Steam release version stable, bug fix most visible issues, and implement whatever optimisation they can whilst prepping for a major update that involved integrating LUA finally. The sort of optimisation people are clamouring for isn't the sort of thing that would be in a simple hotfix patch. It would be done as part of a major version release. And that requires Toady to do actual work in finalising content update or at least agreeing to what should be done and locked in place so they can work around it.

A lot of FPS optimisation was done with the Steam release and then multi-threading patch. It is noticeably better compared to older versions, or at least it can handle a lot more things existing/happening before the chugging becomes noticeable. But pathfinding is a significant chunk of it and has any number of other things tied into it that can limit what can be done with it. It definitely should be addressed, but it is a bigger undertaking that would involve finalising and optimising a bunch of things outside of pathfinding itself in order to happen.
