Dragon Quest XII project has rebooted development for third time. Engine and designworks done, story and gameplay are key failings.

Dragon Quest I&II HD-2D Remake will have special surprise for fans at the end if you played III first. Will tie into that manga and the next remake.

New musou game in works to cover for XII project. XII project delays may also mean next remake (not that trilogy.) will be first before it, aiming for 2027 release.

2026 will be new MD title.

Horii takes the stories very seriously and considers the culture surrounding them when he writes them.
Dragon Quest VII and VIII, for example, are complementary works, where the first is very long and slow, like an episodic anime, while VIII was very fast paced, like a Final Fantasy title, to appeal to both kinds of DraQue fans.
Dragon Quest XI in particular was created to feel comfortable and familiar as Japan was still in the midst of recovering from tragedies that decade. XII Project has to be something meaningful to the legacy of the men behind the franchise, who have since passed.

they can delay XII as much as they want to perfect it as long as they give us the Zenithia trilogy in HD2D. VII,VIII, and IX need to be ported.

There’s some nuance there. Remake was a troubled project. We do know the actual develepment time for Rebirth was around 3 years. One year was spent updating Remake to next gen and the Yuffie DLC. Since they opted out of doing any more DLC, a release mid to late 2027 isn’t unrealistic. Can also use the 30th anniversary nicely to kick off the marketing campaign.

Dragon Quest X Offline and Dragon Quest Walk. I don't know if the change got rolled over into the main Dragon Quest X, but it was already there for Offline, and neither of those games have got (or will ever get) a western release.
