It's disingenuous to say it's in a golden age, varlamore is very good but the game has more bots than it has ever had, GP prices are inflated to fuck, most skills are entirely worthless because bosses just drop all gathering skill supplies, and a huge portion of manufacturing skill items.
The game has ironically become more linear in almost every capacity over the last decade. Most of the "difficult" skills have a very easy palatable skilling boss to do to grind out tons of exp and rewards, to a degree it's the most efficient way to play, and of course, because of that, no one will ever do anything else.
Shit like forestry got added after they fought so hard to put it in when most didn't want it, then they fucked it up because it made things too easy, and now it's dead content so no one bothers anymore.
Literally the only thing worth playing for is bossing/pve.
PVP is in an okay state for the first time in a long time, because of the fun tools they've added to fill the gaps of a lot of super high end gear basically taking over the game. But it's still not exactly good because you can just AHK undetected and 1 tick flick/swap.

Raids are the only actual multiplayer content that requires some level of collaboration. There are "multiplayer" minigames but they don't require any teamwork and most of them are soloable if you want to do it that way. Because their server just accepts whatever the fuck data any user sends to it, the point of getting rid of 3rd party clients isn't to specifically stop custom clients themselves, it's so they can lock down the servers to only allow verified data from their official client. Look at Rendi's videos for example, he exploits shit that shouldn't be possible by just sending packets to the server that the client would never be able to replicate. THAT is why bots are so rampant in this game, because the server never checks whether inputs are actually legitimate at all. A bot can just send a packet to the server they activated a prayer without ever having to open the prayer tab for example.

I did. I spent a few hundred hours getting my stats to 75+, getting my quest cape. After that I realised I couldn't do one more minute of Tempeross/Guardians of the Rift/Sculliceps/any mining/any agility. There's so many boring, slow skills in this game, so many agonising gear grinds. I watch guys like Settled and Limpwurt do the same shit for a thousand hours and although they say they don't enjoy the grind, they still do it.

I don't enjoy the journey. What's left after that? Collection logs? The combat achievements were fun up to Hard & Elite.

Anyway I've left my easy WFH corporate job, starting a business and I'm having a kid soon so my free time is far more limited. I also think it's good OSRS doesn't cater to me, it means everyone that spends 6 months trying to green log Vardovis or something feels like it's an accomplishment. I got all 120s in RS3 and that didn't feel like much since the rates are so high and every skill is actually AFK.

Anyway, enjoy your grinds guys. Except the weirdos in /OSRS/, that general got really strange a couple of years ago.

I learned Dwarf Fortress on ASCII and even I can't handle the shit interface of OSRS. I think it's the microscopic inventory and stamina that filtered me after about 20 hours.
I tried, but the game is straight up bad, if you don't have nostalgia.
I can see why a streamer would play it. It's slow enough to not pay attention and get paid to play it, and tons of people will watch. AFK enough to read chat.
As a normal human, that didn't play it years ago, it's really boring and clunky. I enjoyed BDO tradeskills and crafting 100x more than OSRS.
I'm 35 and have no shame in admitting some old games just suck to play without nostalgia.
Diablo 2 is another great example. Without nostalgia, that game feels like shit to play. I put 20 hours into that remaster because D2 is one of my friend's favorite games.

New combat system really makes you feel the 100 ticks per minute, it feels laggy and ability input is slow. Aside from Necromancy, all the other combat styles are bloated and learning them on full manual isn't satisfying.

Art style for outfits and armour is very disparate and downright ugly sometimes, however some environments like Menaphos, Um, the Archaeology sites etc are gorgeous so I'm neutral on it.

The game is extremely afk-able, which allowed me to hit 120 in everything with it on mobile/second monitor, however was the final nail in the coffin for socialisation. It also has a player base very concentrated in hubs like Wars Retreat, Max Guild, Fort Forinthry, or bossing instances. The only people running around the game are people doing clues or quests, everyone else just teleports.

Smaller player base and far more top-heavy due to fewer new players and far fewer bots.

I think RS3 is a better ironman experience, but OSRS is better for everything else. I wouldn't play either again though.

Before you'd never know what item could be sold by others in the General Store for quick low gp, lots of people would gather and see if someone was selling runes, gems, or maybe a specific item you'd need for a quest.
General Stores were great for item deletion and kept the economy healthy, now they're only selling knifes and tinderboxes.

So yes, GE not so great
