Getting out of the players' way and giving the impression of "doing nothing" is exactly what you want from a digital storefront/DRM program like Steam. If he's doing his job right, it's going to seem like he's doing nothing at all. The whole point is to allow the purchasing, downloading, and playing of games to be as seamless, simple, and easy to use as possible

Steam is an anticonsumer monopoly and a form of DRM. You do not own Steam products, Valve does and can revoke access at any time like they did when they recently censored several hundred video games on orders of the Trump administration.
They are not your friends.

Gabe Newell is a known scammer who commits false advertising and fraud.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

I could point to any number of development companies and have a whole laundry list of shit I could complain about. Even ones I like.
My issues with Valve begin and end with
>Why are all the Source 2 SDKs windows only?
>Why can't I invite non-friends to Steam Groups without individually sending them a link to it
>WHERE STEAMHOME DESKTOP CLIENT
And those are relatively minor issues.

Doesn't this Mr. Newell know that gaming psychology experts have proven that incremental progress mobile games that feature limited time events and exclusive cosmetics are the modern approach to gaming monetization?

Heh, he's going to succumb to our superior marketing promotion data that we paid "experts" millions of dollars to analyze. He's going down any minute now... aaaaaany minuuuuute now... yeah...

It's that simple. I don't think about Steam because it's such an unobtrusive piece of software. Any other storefront, I think of how much of a hassle it is to do things.

console corpos are way worse by a mile
steam had to be sued in australia to improve their refund terms and they implemented it globally
meanwhile sony and nintendo still tell you to fuck off if you downloaded and played the game for even a minute

Anonymous No.718546210
The only good alternatives are GOG (Which is never going to be mainstream popular as long as the concept of DRM exists in the minds of gaming corpos) and Itch.io (Niche stuff for the most part). Every other one is either openly hostile to their players or provide a worse service than Steam, GoG and Itch.

What the fuck. Nevermind the fact that you have to browse a web page to manage your own library.
>GOG
>same shit with the launcher (though migration is easier)
>without the launcher, have to...browse a web page to manage my library
>in that scenario, I'm downloading files in 4GB chunks (because FAT32 is totes still a thing, y'all) and taking another step to install
>also, GOG has no games
>also, GOG begs for money when you buy
>also, GOG has games prehacked with sometimes outdated community patches, so undoing that is a nightmare
>also, official patches are delayed a lot of the time
EA, MS, and Ubisoft don't even really count, and they all have their own shitty launchers that are functionally identical to GOG's and EA's.
Battle.net is a good launcher, but the only games are Diablo 1, 2, and 4.
So Steam is there, installing and running my games reliably. But there's no reason to like it.

Your cartridges and discs are all that you "own" the data on them isn't yours and any slight damage to the storage media will ruin it completely

You've always been renting data, it's just the vehicle to get that data to your home was different in the past. You can back up your Steam games in 20 different USB storage drives if you feel like it. Fuck, you can burn them to DVD if you have a spare DVD burner from 2005 lying around.

Your Atari 2600 cartridges are legally yours but there's no guarantee you can play them in perpetuity. The slightest dampness and they're gone.

Of course now you can stream your install to everyone at the LAN since it's faster.

SteamOS is already better than windows, the only shit that's kinda annoying is it being autistic about installing to ANYTHING but an NVME ssd.
Even the eMMC ssd that came with the og deck.
