Japan considers 3/5 to be excellent. 5/5 is reserved for out of this world, no equal, life changing experiences.

All of the reviews are heavily weighted so it's almost impossible for a game to get a score under 4/5, and it's physically impossible to go lower than a 3. The score weighting on DLsite is so bad that 4.5/5 and up are decent games, 4.7/5 and up is great games, and anything under 4.5 is probably trash.

It's not just about the difficulty, but the feeling of "being under pressure", or even story where something sad happens.
I get that Japanese society as a whole is stressful, but giving negative reviews just because a game doesn't keep you smiling 100% of the time is a bit unfair.

Any game with a story has sad moments. If there's a story, it can't be all rainbows and zero problems, because then characters would have no motivation to do anything, and providing that is the most important role of the story.
Minus the nu-indies, of course, where everything is happiness and irony.
But by those "based" standards FF7 is bad, because at some points it can make you sad. There are also timed segments that make you stressed.
And last thing: even if you actually believe that every game should be like Mario without anything serious ever happening, which makes Japanese "based" for giving those negative reviews, note that the difference isn't THAT big. It's not like westerners have 95% positive and Japanese have 20%. Most gamers are basically the same, Japan just have a bit more "pussies" then other countries.
And as for China, the difference probably comes from crying about disrespect for their country.

If i say that Fromsofts boss design is trash people will call me a casual and tell me to go back to Call of Duty. You are only ever allowed to shit on a game in the west if the game is either outright broken, a PC port or if the dev is a racist bigot chud who hates trannies. We've got overinflated rankings for video games specifically due to the western reviews and market. In every other form of entertainment like books, music, television, movies, and even other stuff like food you don't see this overinflated level of ratings like you do in video gaming. Occasionally you'll get people saying a movie is a "Masterpiece" or have someone like Rolling Stone say a movie is a "5 out of 5 stars" but in general it's not like that. I'd assume this has to do with the schooling system where 60 is basically a failing grade and 70 is barely passing so that rating system carries over into other aspects of life.

Japan and China in this case are using a ranking system like normal people or other western rankings. 3/5 would be slightly above average because it is. 4/5 would be an incredible game, and 5/5 would be life changing. It's why 40/40 games in Famitsu were so prized and why there was a general downturn in the quality of their rankings once they started giving that to games more frequently. If I remember right anything above like a 35 in Famitsu used to be literally the best games to ever come out and now it's basically their new middleground with anything below 30 basically being worthless, 35 is your standard, 37-38 is incredible, and 40 is a paid review.
