The #1 reason mascot platformers are dead is because mid-budget games are dead. Large scale companies (that aren't Nintendo) hate the idea of making a game that can't be sold to shareholders as some big-dick blockbuster that requires 300+ devs and $200m, and Mascot Platformers are inherently poorly suited for that. This means all of them sit in IP Hoarder Limbo where companies refuse to do anything with them because

Bubsy, meanwhile, is a series with no reputation owned by a company with no reputation. The audience has no expectations of quality for a Bubsy game, so no matter how bad it is, there's no backlash. If it ends up good, you get free marketing from people being like "wait, there's a Bubsy game that isn't shit?"

To add onto this, Bubsy is really the purfect IP for a smaller studio like the Demon Turf guys because he has a really unique situation compared to all those other 90s mascots. Most of them while "failed", really didn't do much other than fizzle out and go away because people didn't give a shit about them. Bubsy meanwhile had the explosive diarrhea that was Bubsy 3D which made the IP extremely infamous, but because of that infamy you gain get that cushion of zero expectations, the leeway to take the piss out of the franchise, and the additional marketing of people being shocked that anyone would bother making another Bubsy game in 2025. Compare it to something like when Kao got a reboot, nobody cared nearly as much because that was just one of those okay mascot platformer franchise that did it's thing and then vanished.

If I'm heading an indie studio that's made some solid platformers in the past, I'm fucking salivating at the chance to work with an IP like Bubsy. Nothing but benefits there.

It's the same reason why, despite Squeenix openly saying they'd license out the Gex IP to anyone who'd approach with a decent pitch, nobody's actually bothered to do that; people actually LIKE Gex, his series just fizzled out because Crystal Dynamics got absorbed into Squeenix and all the people who worked on it left or moved on to different projects. You just can't make that work anywhere near as easily as a series as infamous as Bubsy. Bubsy also has another unique factor to his circumstances:

Like, even among the Mascot Platformers that undebatably sucked complete and utter ass, Bubsy is unique in that he's at least got some charm as a character. Meanwhile, something like Jelly Boy is just sincerely unappealing.

No, it isn't. The first Bubsy game was slightly above average and well received at the time, and the ensuing games were so shit that nobody was really asking for more. Memes really, the series was terrible and I think most people only rented the games to have a subpar experience because that was the one game left in the shelf but you know, it was not chores or homework. Makes you realize most 90s platform games were terrible but least terrible than the LJN crap from the previous gen, in fact even LJN had 2 good games in the Snes / Genesis era.

Then games sucked again in the 3D era with another gen where there is 1 good game for every 10 bad.

Something like Titan Souls would had been the rage back then.

Hard games were for the most part unfun because for context, you only had 1 weekend to beat them on a rental and games had to be hard for padding because something like Golden Axe has like 6 or 7 stages.
Super Metroid, Earthbound, FF, Megaman X, Sonic, Mario and DQ were on the easier side and those are games synonymous with Nostalgia. Very few games walked the thin line between challenging fun and fucking bullshit. Shinobi and Street Fighter are the best example of games that are fair but fun. Plenty of games were hard because they were frankly bad.

There is a reason some people prefer Super Castlevania IV to Rondo of Blood and no one was really a hardcore gamer, sometimes people masteedr a hard game because well that was the one game they got and that was as good as it gets.
Most kids at the time had at most like 5 games they owned and the rest was rentals, reason why people look back at Blockbuster favorably. The PS1 was a game changer thanks to all the blatant piracy it enabled.

Look, I grew up back then but I am not fooled by nostalgia. Check the Quake 2 and Heretic + Hexen re-releases they are so much better than the original versions to the point Heretic is drastically improved to be more fun than when I played it.
My issue however is that while games today are better, for an old timer like me with limited time, it feels like I have seen in it all.
