Soraya Saga (wife of Tetsuya Takahashi who worked on Xenogears/Xenosaga with him) came up with Sabin and Edgar. She even made her own doujin about Figaro after the game.

I played FFVI for the first time recently and a lot of moments stuck out for me. I was fortunate enough to go in mostly blind, only knowing about Kefka poisoning the village. In my mind the fact that there's so many potentially interchangeable characters for any given situation means that you only get surface level reactions for any given event from everyone at most points in the game, and the same applies to how everyone interacts with each other outside of isolated story events. Iirc many events are written with this weird jrpg style where there will be a "cutscene" happening and you know each interchangeable character has one unique meaningless line they say and then the scene moves on. Only the fixed characters react in a meaningful way. I remember this being noticeable during the adventure frequently.
That doesn't detract from the many structured story emotional beats where the characters on your party are predetermined (or the monologues or flashbacks for that matter). But a more concise casting that was always on the spotlight means they could've delivered more articulate writing for these types of moments.

Strago could've used more story moments considering previous elder party members had great moments like Galuf and Tellah instead of just being a lore dump and caretaker. Shadow being mysterious actually lends itself well to his narrative without overreaching into a really sad backstory. I do agree Setzer should've gotten more going on considering how well known he is and how rare airships appear to be in their world versus naval travel which appeared to be the main means of transportation.

I'm glad we did get WoR in the end though. Gave some nice closure to characters like Cyan and Locke who were really well done.

I was born in 1980 and played it when it came out. It's the best of the mainline series. Picrel is underrated. Tactics War of the Lions the original has the best story. 7 is a bane upon humanity and should be expunged from all records. Everything that came after tried to copy it in some way and FF had never been the same since. Really since they stopped being known as Squaresoft. Fuck Enix.

I'm always of two minds about it. On one hand it's nice to get that freedom and learn more about some of the characters' backstories. But at the same the pacing of the WoB is so nicely done and you lose that entirely along with most party interactions, since there wasn't really a way to account to the order at which players would regain their characters.

I realized why the end of ff9 felt so rushed , it's the complete lack of any meaningful content outside the beaten path
There are many examples in final fantasy games where after clearing a certain point the world completely opens and many side quest events can occur , no matter how obscure there are always nooks and crannies to explore , and in most cases it's where some of the lesser developed characters in your party get to shine.
Take Gau from FF6 for instance , before the world of ruin the only thing that the player can identify is that he's a kid , he's somewhat of a scavenger living amongst the native wildlife of the Veldt and he likes picking up shiny objects , if it were just that for his entire character then people would call him severely underdeveloped , but in the World of Ruin you find out that the crazy old man you encounter in a house when the world was normal is actually Gau's father , what ensues is a montage of the almost all of the characters that you can obtain in the game helping Gau to look classy and distinguished , when they go to introduce him though he tells them that he has no son , that he had a dream where a demon child was ruined his life and he threw it over a waterfall , this infuriated Sabin but Gau told him to stop , that although the man thinks of him that way , he's thankful that his father is alive. Even though Gau is a minor character in the grand scheme of things he still gets development because of side content
In 9 there is none of that because of how linear the game is , the devs tried to remedy this by having you "choose" what cutscenes to see of a given character in a town but it's not a whole event made for them and could never fix how little we know of the characters like Amerant who gets like one scene with Freya and just ceases to exist narratively for the entire game

IX does have those moments but its requirements can be quite specific so I'm not surprised people miss them. ATE's can follow each other up but you can also miss out on them easily and thereby permanently miss character moments. And for example for a disc 4 Lani scene you have to enter Madain Sari with Garnet/Amarant and then revisit without either of them to get a scene. Or Quan's Dwelling where you have to have Quina and Vivi in the party to initiate a new sequence.

Each major plot point; each small comedy could be expanded upon for pages without having to make up *dumb* filler shit. The small sections where one travels the overworld could have prose added like a Tolkien novel.

Kefka for example, was a mad dog barely on Emperor Gestahl's leash, and you knew it from the start; there wasn't this secretive, self-hating-morally-chaotic fuckery. You knew it, and you steeled yourself for the final battle long in advance.

IV is arguably the first "real" final fantasy, with an intended experience that challenges you to use specific characters rather than simply curating your ideal team from the get-go. V is where all of the interesting gameplay choices in the series are refined from the first 3 games and pushed forward into the more narratively oriented systems of the big standout games, and VI is the first game that does what square became known for- squeezing the system dry to produce the best experience they could manage

Finally, you don't need to skip the Returner meeting to get the Genji Glove, if you tell Banon no once and go into the storage area, the Returner there will give you it and then you can say yes to Banon to get max plot You don't get the Gauntlet though.

I will never stop shilling BNW. It's got so many cool and meaningfully different ways to build and use each character, not to mention the cool yet not too overpowered synergies. The enemies were also tuned to be both non-trivial and fair. I'm already on my fourth playthrough and I'm still finding new uses for existing tools and more optimal strats for reliably surviving and dispatching enemies.

You can still overlevel yourself to get relatively easy wins (as long as you don't outright choke, which still happened to me), but you can also disable/reenable EXP gain at any point if the game's too easy.

You can plow through it quickly. Consider that you can easily beat the game without ever equipping a single piece of materia (magic, skills, etc) without any grinding and you won't have any trouble. Just don't do any of the optional stuff (chocobo racing / breeding, secret forest, etc) as that is the time consuming stuff.
