That's why I actually gave a shit about the story in and thought Nine Sols has much better writting than Hollow Knight. Yi is an actual character with his own personality, feelings, motives and his character interactions are all the more dynamic and fleshed out than the average one sided interaction in HK. Maybe Silksong will do something more interesting with Hornet, but TC really needs to ditch the bland and boring protagonist bullshit.

I can't decide which would be more fun to see, the game being a massive success or a massive failure. Either outcome would cause tons of entertaining seething. The worst outcome would be if it's just average.

Except Pale King's story never really went the level of depth and nuance of Yi's journey. You never see the Pale King express regret or find himself conflicted with his world view or at least the level of Yi. If anything the Pale King isn't really proven wrong ultimately in the story, while Yi's view is utterly destroyed. Sure technically you could have just killed Radiance straight at the source instead of relying on a vessel, but that doesn't really prove PK wrong like New Kulun being based on a whole lie does with Yi.

You don't see him have a relationship with someone like Yi does with Heng or Shaunshaun or with the other council members. And it doesn't help that characters like the protagonist and the Hollow Knight aren't really interesting characters with any characterization to get me to really care about their perspective as characters associated with the PK. Meanwhile Heng and Shaunshaun are actually interesting characters that present their different perspective to Yi and challenge him.

Funny you should mention nine sols. That is a perfect case of good narrative intentions but horrific execution. Nine sols forgets its primary identity that it is a video game first and foremost. It was ok to include all of the characterization but because they interwove all of the slice of life sequences with player stat upgrades they fabricated ill will and a lack of player investment in the narrative. The player goal was at odds with the intent. If players are given the option to voluntarily engage with the characters without impacting the adhd gamer brain min maxing path then those who seek out the narrative are already selected for. I sat through the whole nine sols narrative and absorbed every word. Maybe I missed something in HK, but the characterization is too minimal that it does leave me desiring more and not really finding it memorable. And PK isn't really comparable to Yi. Because PK's perspective being challenged is just, "it's not the best and most effective solution" where as Yi goes the extra length with his perspective on how he disregards everything about Taoism and believes everything in science and that it can solve everything.

There's how he believes in the lie of New Kulun, tries to achieve immortality to buy time and enslaves the apemen as livestock in order to find a cure. He's literally meddling with nature itself.

There's how he dismisses some of the things his sister says of which this ultimately leads to him leaving her on bad terms. Of where he regrets leaving her and never visiting her again. The story in HK never really touched me emotionally as much as Nine Sols ever did.

The atmospheric beginning reeled me in, but it's like a 7/10 until you start chasing Hornet through Greenpath, an 8/10 until you get your ass kicked by Mantis Lords and either git gud or do as the NPCs suggest and hit City of Tears to get a new weapon to beat them. 9/10 until Broken Vessel/Lost Kin, and then afterwards keeps its spot as a 10/10 and progressively climbs to GoAT status and peaking at both Radiance and Grim Troupe DLC. Most of the challenge comes from the DLC. Nightmare King was a PitA, and I didn't have or know about Shade Cloak when fighting him. Dark Prince Zote has sporadic ass movement and fighting him in the middle of a boss rush was fucked. And I really never figured out Sly's pattern, I just wail on him and take the hits when I get to him. And yes, the Pantheon version of Radiance is fucking bullshit. You can learn and do the dance so to speak with Grimm and Pure Vessel. I have beaten them without getting hit (but I will not lie I struggled against beating Pure Vessel for the first time). Absolute Radiance has those bullshit orbs that you have to keep an eye on while dodging other bullshit mechanics.

Personally I found the atmosphere of hollow knight too monotone all around. Sure there's slight variations but it's all gloomy and buggy and moist and it got to me during the 3 consecutive playthroughs I did of it.
The gameplay though, sure it feels stiff but it doesn't need to be fluid to be fun, I liked it a lot. It's plenty challenging, the fights are fun and memorable, and the map is huge and honestly awesome.

I finished HK and I thought it was overrated.
There's some charm to it but they clearly tried too hard to be the "dark souls of metroidvanias".

I only played it the other day and it's fine.
9 Sols came out recently, it's a bit updated though. But it's not different enough to be an issue for me and I went back to HK with ease.

I'm glad 9sols isn't just like how 3d souls-like games are to Dark Souls - clunky. Feels like a genuine competitor.

You're not wrong, Hollow Knight's level design in general is quite simplistic and not very good, the upgrades are very underwhelming too. It's still fun to play and very polished despite that but no where comparable to the metroids and the vanias in terms of gameplay.

The bosses are quite good if you enjoy that kind of choreography style of design.
