Enjoyer here. It's the bane of our existence. It's extremely hard to find ones where the guy even acts like he's fighting and EXTREMELY rare to find one where he genuinely fights and loses, though those do exist. Basically just string bean dudes against very athletic women.

It's about speed. The longer the object the faster the tip moves. The tip of a spear being jabbed at you is like a snake going for your eyes or throat and you can be made effective in like a day of training with it.

In that same time Europe's guns had evolved significantly. This is why Europeans deserved to conquer the world.

Going off of the options+names here Bastard Sword+Heavy Mace.
The bastard sword is a great all rounder with pretty good reach but isn't too big to be unreasonable to carry around 24/7 like a greatsword would be, and the mace is a good length to be used in more confined spaces+wouldn't be a pain to carry, it would be good against creatures a blade wouldn't be like a golem, and an all-steel construction without thin blades means it has the durability you'd want in a sidearm.
Maybe swap the heavy mace for the light hammer/heavy pick.

Scimitar and Heavy mace.

Scimitar certainly, seems like a great weapon especially in my (untrained) hands. The slashing is simple and preferred over the much heavier and slightly longer falchion for the speed. Falchion would be the choice if the scimitar wasn't there. It hits heavier, is heavier, and slightly longer. But the speed and energy used to slash with it..... eh..... gotta think the scimitar would be the better choice. Assuming unarmored that is. Slashing vs plate armor is nicht gut. If armored then you need to stab or crush.

The 2nd one is tricky.... I think I would like either the heavy mace or the morning star. Again, these weapons are simple and still devastating. The heavy mace is probably superior against armor, the morning star looks to be slightly longer and has the spiked ball on the end.... but the stab capacity of it is a joke, whilst the heavy mace still retains some ability in that regard. Close one, but think would go with the heavy mace. You get hit in a limb with the heavy mace and guaranteed it won't be of any use for a long time. Hit a fully armored person in the chest and they are all but done. The piercing ability or the morning star isn't deep enough to put someone out of commission in many cases.

I'd presume you use it like a quarterstaff but try to hit with the flail head. Which yeah, they were sometimes gripped like you're doing overhand pull-ups. You wouldn't just hold it out horizontally, you'd mainly be striking with your dominant hand's side with the option to whip out the back end.
It seems like it'd be incredibly awkward no matter how you use it.

I thought this was interesting: baseballs thrown by pitchers are actually heavier and fly just as fast as rocks thrown from slings (if the pitcher is good and decided to go for a fastball).
Yet batters get hit by pitches all the time, with no armor, and they just get bruised. So how could slings do anything against armored opponents?
It's all in the surface area: a baseball is large and round, while rocks thrown by slings are tiny and very dense for their size.

Sometimes the difference between a bruise and a shattered bone + penetration is not in speed or mass, but in density and surface area

The best shot a 12th-15th century samurai would have against same period knight would unironically be styling on them with horse archery. The knights did sometimes bring crossbows to battlefields, but usually they were 100% melee combatants.

Yes a perfectly forward movement won't be sped up, although your eye will barely be able to focus on it anyways, but if I'm jabbing at you it's going to be moving and waving side to side the whole time.

Greatsword + dagger with full modern era plate armor is the best combo. Even better if you carry a light crossbow as well. This was pretty much the meta back in the 17th century, a pike would be even better for waging war but it would be extremely inconvenient to use in tight dungeon corridors.

I remember once falling for this shit.
I was on my way to my martial arts dojo where I practiced my fighting with warhammers, when a plane was flying over me which had an advertising banner attached to it reading "slopweapons.ch - Best weapons only here o algo!!!". That day, my warhammer broke during practice and I had to give it to repair so I needed a temporary replacement. I remembered the banner I have read and decided that I should buy a replacent hammer from slopweapons.ch because what could go wrong?
But when I got on the site, all the weapons in the shop looked somewhat like >>718767095 >>718767429 >>718768189 or >>718735136 which really weirded me out. I went to the section for blunt weapons to find a new hammer and the first hammer in the featured section consisted of a cross shaped handle with one hammerhead on each of the four ends each. I scrolled down trough countless of impractical looking weapons until I found this tacticool mall ninja but still functional looking warhammer and I decided to buy it.
A few days later, the package arrived at my home. I opened it and the stench of chinese sweat shop air overwhelmed me from inside the package. It turns out, the hammer was actually made of multiple segments that have to be screwed together. The parts felt very low quality. I assembled the hammer but the threads very lose. I then picked up the hammer and it felt way too light to do any serious damage and really flimsy. I did a simple practice strike with the hammer against my training dummy and it instantly just broke into 3 pieces and the head went flying into one of my windows. Luckily, it was too light to crack the window.
Money stolen! I will never buy anything on slopweapons.ch ever again.

Heavy Pick for adventuring, or dealing with heavy armor

Flails are garbage weapons for retards.
Maces are excellent weapons but less versatile than a sword, and the Heavy Pick will deal with heavy armor anyway
Sling is useless without having taken a LOT of time to practice with it, but if you're the 0.0001% of the world's population who's learned how to use it then it's probably a decent option
Longsword and Greatsword are also viable options for a primary weapon. Two-bladed is retarded.

>Mays threw with a submarine delivery, and it was late afternoon. Eyewitnesses recounted that Chapman did not react to the pitch at all, presumably unable to see it. The sound of the ball striking Chapman's skull was so loud that Mays thought it had hit the end of Chapman's bat; he fielded the ball and threw to first base.
>Home plate umpire Tommy Connolly, noticing that Chapman was bleeding from his left ear, screamed towards the stands for a doctor. Tris Speaker, who had been on deck, rushed to Chapman, as did several players from each team. Carl Mays merely stood on the mound. Chapman tried to walk, but his knees buckled. As he was helped off the field by his teammates, he mumbled "I'm all right; tell Mays not to worry... ring....Katie's ring," before falling unconscious. Chapman was taken to St. Lawrence Hospital, a short distance from the Polo Grounds, where he was diagnosed with a depressed skull fracture. Despite emergency surgery to relieve swelling on his brain, Chapman died at 4:40 a.m. the next day. His pregnant wife Katie, summoned from Cleveland by phone, arrived at 10:00 a.m. and fainted upon learning he had died.

Metal wouldn't really protect against a good mace either. The blunt force trauma makes any reinforced club a fierce weapon sure to essentially one-hit anyone. As a secondary it's probably the greatsword, something long and that can chop and stab. An ideal weapon for someone with minor defensive apparel.

In what world? Samurai swords are fragile breakable little things compared to a knights full-plate armor. Samurai swords are best for exposed flesh or very light armor, usually in Japanese treditional combat and the equipment they had at the time. >You realize that guy wasn't actually trying to kill you right?
It depends against who you're fighting and if you know/trust them to adhear to cirtain rulesets of LARP combat.
Guys get really into it in a full-contact (a more aggressive ruleset of LARP combat. Is more premisable of holding your opponent weapon and/or body, a lot of full-contact battles devolve into wrastling as a result esp with more heavily armored guys) battles. They want to win, and train a lot in cold weapon combat and martial arts (at least the folks I knew). They don't want to physically hurt you and if they're actually experienced, will leave you relatively unharmed, but you will get scuffed and bruised by the end (sometimes bleed, if it was a really intense fight againset a person you know and trust not to acidentally kill you or break a bone) also some battle rulesets say the battle is over only when your opponent is unable to fight anymore due to futigue (taps out) or a KO so heads are targeted a lot in those (usually punches to the head with a plate-armored fist; they try to avoid the face, though and go for the side of the head to avoid breaking your nose or cause more serious damage and you're helmeted). We used wooden weapons, for general information. They can inflict actual damage and require training before people trust you to use them.

>All the spearman has to do is pull it back a bit and then stab you in your face.
One dodge is all it takes to take control over the spearman's spear. Especially if the guy has a shield, you're fucked. He'll grab onto the pole and rush you to close distance (like an archer, it's a good idea to have a side-arm for close combat as a spearman). A spear is better at crowd control and can break lines and formations, if the opponents are less skilled and less disciplined (so are bows, for that matter; people scatter to find shelter behind a tree). No one want to be the guy who gets hit in the face by the spear or a well aimed arrow.

If I have to choose from this I'd take a longsword and dagger. Dagger basically just as a tool.
Really if I was going on an adventure I'd probably also want a one-handed axe and at least a shield. The axe could be used with the shield if I'm up against enemies with arrows, and the axe would be a good tool for chopping wood.
All this stuff would be pretty easy to carry.
Polearms like spears or halberds make for better weapons, but wouldn't be so good for adventuring because they're not as portable and you can't practically carry them when you're climbing up cliffs and stuff.

Anyone who says this is retarded. First off if you're ever allowing or requiring someone to be knocked fully unconscious with a blow to the head you're fucked plain and simple. Secondly is that any combatives trained person would rather take a blow to the face than the side of the head since a broken nose is way less of a problem than fucking brain damage.

Depends on who you're fighting and how armored and futigued they are (some armors are VERY heavy, constrictive and futigue you pretty fast so your movements are slower/restricted.), but stepping aside and/or blocking a stab with a sword/shield and following through with the motion, wrapping your arm around the pole is guranteed to give you enough time and an opprotunity to grab onto the pole and slide down it to close distance. All you need to do is fight aggresssive and not too defensive/cowardly that you're giving the spearman the obvious distance advantage. Take away the distance a soon as you can and it's a guranteed victory unless they abandon their spear and go for the side-arm; usually a short sword or a dagger as these are easily stored and don't cause manuverability issues or futigue you too much to use.
As I said, spears are best used in crowd control or in a formation. One on one, a spear usually fails, from my experience.

Depends on the ruleset, some rulesets are more realisric than other more contstrictive/tamer (that we usually train kids with). In the LARPs I've been going to, everyone was experienced, familiar and trustworthy to go for you aggressively while not killing/injuring you too badly so the rulesets were more premisive and fights were fought to win (kill. In anyway.) sometimes with a weapon, sometimes they get close enough to do a martial arts move to trip you down and then sticking their swords down, impailing you, which counts as a victory. There are also steel weapon rulesets that we didn't use but hung-out with the guys who did, (requires actual armor and is winned by incapacitating the opponent) and it was a spectical to watch two guys just go at it with steel swords until they couldn't move anymore (armor is heavy and will futigue you quickly).
>it's literally impossible for a human to overcome the reflex to back away when someone slashes at your eyes or throat with a sharp edge
Very dependent on the person. Those who have their shit together in a fight will be more deciplined and won't flinch, but utilize the stabbing motion to their advantage and even block it with a weapon or shield as an instinct or muscle memory (dependent on who and how agile they are, and if they have constrictive armor); that's why we train our people regularly in proper combat discipline like knowing how to keep a line/formation in face of spears and bows (sure, someone might get hit but the rest of the group gets a better chance of survival) Undisciplined people will back off and even break formation at the sight of a spear flailing towards them.
>I've taken an advanced bayonet fighting package

>First off if you're ever allowing or requiring someone to be knocked fully unconscious with a blow to the head you're fucked plain and simple.
Helmets are used for protection and they usually tap-out out of futigue or head truma (haze) rather then be knocked flat out unconscious (they know their limits and practice as much caution as they can considering the situation) and a KO can be falling to the ground and not being able to get back up usually due to futigue. It's a ruleset that is rarely used and is agreed upon by two fighters that know eachother very well and are ready to get a bit bloody. I never fought with that ruleset, for general information; though, brain damage and a broken nose are risks for sure and the praticepents know it before going into a fight like that. You won't find that ruleset in any game I've been to, diplomatic or militant game, but usually in one-off battles between friends that want to get a little rowdy with their close friends.
>Secondly is that any combatives trained person would rather take a blow to the face than the side of the head
Blows to the front of the head do happen a lot also ofc considering the distance of the two at the hight of the battle (can become wresteling). The goal is to at least haze the oponnent enough that he taps-out. As I said, a broken nose and possible brain damage are risks that the combatants are awear of and accept beforehand when getting into a fight with that ruleset. Though I didn't encounter concussed people at the group I was in (as far as I know of, no one had to be evacuated by an emergency service, one guy bit his tongue badly cause of a shield blow to the chin and needed stitches and was taken to the ER once) since everyone took safety seriously and were experienced with said rulesets that were used, and knew when to stop. For example, one right of passage is to close an open matchbox with a quick swing of a sword without making the matchbox crumple or fall on its side.

A lot of the LARPing community is Russian dominated here (they usually use Russian language as dwarvish in games). Although some local cosplayers started attending the more diplomatic games (that focus on acting out scenes more then actual combat and use sponge weapons as opposed to the Russian wooden swords and spears), usually with more focus on spectical and acting/diplomacy rather then combat. Their costumes are great down to the tiniest detail but they are fregile physically and mentally as people (and are usually younger than their Russian counterparts) so you can't always drink with them, for example, or have to take them to the side and coordinate scenes with them beforehand and be careful not to hit them too hard (with a sponge sword) or say something they find offensive or out of place, cause they'll make an actual scene and break gameplay. The games that I frequented were produced by the Russians and used more realistic rulesets and more militaristic focused games that detured young cosplayers from coming though.

>I would love to spar with you lol. Fucking take your head right off
Head blows are forbidden in most rulesets including full-contact; hitting the balls is forbidden in all rulesets I've heard of.
Depends on what I'm fighting with and against. If it's a spear against a sword and shield and without armor, you will lose, in cirtain rulesets (like full-contact. Some rulesets forbid to take a hold of a person or his weapon so strategies will vary). But my fighting days are over and behind me and my body is atrophied from NEETing for so long. At my peak, I was quite agile, quick-footed and a fast swinger (which would overwhelm a less experienced fighter) though prone to futigue when armored even in only basic chainmail (which is, like, 20kg or so)or using heavy weapons like a wooden greatsword, which will make my movement sluggish and ineffective. I'm also short so I'll be a smaller target to hit and were froficient with a lot of weapons including polearms like spears and halbards; mostly in formations though, and short bladed weapons like a knife and dagger (A short-sword and a medium shield were my go-tos for extra agility, less futigue, reasonable reach and easy protection though it can be boring and repetitive sometimes, and I'll change things up).

>a real life combat situation involving two men fighting to the death you aren't dodging a spear thrust and then grabbing the shaft like you would in a larp
If you have a shield, it's a piece of cake to deflect the blade and grab onto the shaft no matter how crazed the person infront of you is or how hellbent he is on killing you, if you have your shit together, that is, and don't panic.
>Even if you manage to all that guy has to do is pull the shaft back instantly and the blade will slice your hand apart
That depends on the grip itself and the individual strength of both fighters. Some would dominate other, weaker, opponents in full-contact by the virtue of strength alone and rushing them to submission.
You're coping with the fact that a lone-spearman is an easy target as long as you're not a complete idiot, well equipped, know how to fight and counter/block/perry basic stabbing attacks. It's one of the first things they teach you in training; a decent defence, else, you won't survive for long against any bladed weapon, be the distance advantage as it will be. If you're strong enough and/or have a good grip and position/leverage, you will be able to overwhelm and rush a spearman and close distance very easily. It's just a big harmless stick with a reletivly small edge to it. In formation, spears can rule the battlefield, though (if they are well trained)
