Sakurai mentioned in one of his videos that he doesn't take a normal salary but he takes a cut of the game sales in order to have some investment in the game. The problem is Smash went from selling 13 million to 35 million, so Sakurai likely had a massive payday Nintendo wasn't expecting. They probably figure it would be easier to use staff they are already paying. There is also the fact they are reliant on a guy who doesn't even work for the company. Even Sakurai himself admitted this set up is unusual and was only a thing because of Iwata being Sakurai's friend and being obsessed with the Director/Producer roll (remember when they shilled Sakamoto). Current Nintendo is fine if it's newer people taking the lead role.

Yeah. Smash 6 is unlikely to be happening for a good while. Sakurai has been busy with other stuff and might not even be interested in working on Smash 6. But even without Smash 6, all of Nintendo's larger internal dev teams appear to be busy with other projects. And the same can be said for Bamco, whose Nintendo side of things have been busy working on Air Riders and previously Prime 4.
It would be a complete fucking surprise if Smash 6 was suddenly shown or if it was somehow already in development.

Kirby Air Ride, despite the fond nostalgia, was picked apart for being shallow and baby tier at release. It was never considered a good racer,.beyond the excellent city trial. Don't be so dismissive of arcade racers, there are tons of fantastic entries. Sakurai has stated so many times that complexity, depth and difficulty separates players of different skill levels too much. F-Zero is antithetical to that, and he would hate it.

The best solution to a GX successor is to get the same people who made GX to come back together. Let Sakurai make whatever gimmicky shit he wants. He's not interested in F-Zero.

Tell us of all the excellent mechanics he's pioneered since Melee. Tripping? Customizable moves? Awful mini game modes? Let the man stay in his court and make the stuff he's interested in, instead of having his game philosophy infect other products that he has no business being involved with.

Weird you'd say that, because the vast majority of people who enjoy Melee and Project M aren't competitive fags in the least. They want a game that's fast, fluid, responsive and feels good to play - which nearly none of the Brawl style game are.

Keep chimping out about competitive boogymen. It's pathetic but pretty funny. The vast majority of Melee fans were children when they played it, btw. They dealt with the better physics completely fine. They're also the ones who noticed Brawl played like dogshit and were motivated to fix it.

As someone who was bamboozled into thinking Ultimate was going to be a return to form for Smash, it isn't going to happen. It's never going to happen. Smash will always be actively hostile to the concepts that made Melee a good game, which coincidentally made it a good competitive game. Sakurai and Smash players as a whole are simply too terrified of the competitive boogeyman. Melee was fun as both a casual and a competitive game, whereas Brawl, 4, and Ultimate will turn you into a seething ball of resentment if you ever think to yourself

and are only fun as novelties. The irony of this is that none of Sakurai's design decisions prevent people from playing like toxic cunts online or in tournament. He just created a different form of toxicity. Even disallowing people from taunting online does nothing.

Since I mostly played online in Ultimate, RoA2 has replaced Smash for me. I personally find it more fun than Ultimate ever was to me. lol, we used the same term by chance, but it's true. I don't know when it happened, but people started using the term "competitive" as a sort of reductive scapegoat. I don't get it, personally. I liked Melee when I was a kid playing it on the CRT in my brother's room. I liked Melee when I went to locals and went 0-2 in pools. I think Melee is a better game than Brawl but PM was ass. People played it because Melee died for a little while after Brawl released and they were shit at Brawl and didn't want to spend time getting good. Ultimate is already a festering corpse of a game. You can claim that cancer characters like Steve, Sonic, G&W, Snake, Min-Min, Luigi, and ROB only affect competitive play, but the reality is that these characters are just as prevalent in casual online play, with the addition of zoner characters like Samus who benefit heavily from the additional frames of input delay in online (not to mention lag). If additional DLC or a Switch 2 edition doesn't rebalance Ultimate as a whole, it's fucked.

Casual Ultimate just isn't very fun for a variety of reasons, and competitive Ultimate is a grim hell from which no fun escapes. On reflection, spirit battles were probably the best thing about Ultimate's singleplayer, despite the loss of the trophies. World of Light was a slog, there was no break the targets, homerun contest isn't fun without Melee's mechanics, and classic is... well, it's classic.

What I'm saying is that there's no point in going back to the well with Ultimate, when we already know the water table is poisoned.

I feel like this might get a lot of flack but a rougelike would be really good in Smash. Set it up like Smash Run and it could be really fun. Smash just needs modes you can play over and over again which is why Ultimate sucked so bad. I've tried to play World of Light like Subspace but it doesn't work. Battles are either gimmicky or easy as shit and it just gets old after a while. Doesn't help that trying to change spirits sucks.
