Correct, zoomer audiences just follow streamers around because they don't have any friends and crave the parasocial relationship. This is why games like Roblox can become massively popular even though you've never heard of it and never see adverts for it
Zoomer streamer communities won't try to play Quake because the existing Quake playerbase will instantly annihilate them on entry and even if they're talented enough that they could eventually become competitive they won't stick with it, because their audience wouldn't stick around to watch them getting destroyed for years in a boomer shooter dominated by old men. Boomer shooters with established playerbases that have 20 years worth of experience and legacy skill will never be revived BECAUSE of that established playerbase. Why would a new wave of players pick up a competitive game that other people already have a 20 year headstart in, when they could pick up a brand new game and be on an even playing field?
