Metaphors combat is better than Persona 3-5 but it's slow as fuck and the gating to higher end classes and abilities means you can't even crack open the system until the 70% mark of the game. Expedition 33s system is more freeform with pictos before you even consider the action element which I'll concede can be a matter of taste. You start feeling like you can actually play the game much faster than Metaphor.

I played this for 40 hours and dropped it. Not a single interesting character, or story beat. The setting was every generic fantasy cliche amalgamated into one world.
I can't fathom how this blandfest won best narrative at the game awards.

I think my problem is that I've played all the games it's intentionally copying and mixing together, so everything in it felt like a worse version of something else. It never really delivers anything interesting of its own, and the synthesis it achieves manages to be worse than the sum of its parts because it's missing the things that made the individual elements work in their own games.

Why does Atlus success and superiority make schizoids so mad?

My only gripe is there's too many dungeons where the gimmick is you don't have press turns. Also the brawler lineage just mogs every other physical class into the dirt, but in a good way.

I finished this recently and as a huge atlus fan, I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed in it in the end. It's basically a safe frankenstein of SMT combat, Persona 5 (almost) everything else, and then the most painfully generic story and setting imaginable. For all the story tries to preach about equality and oppression, it doesn't have much to actually comment on it much because Louis' interesting ideology hook from the start devolves into a standard might = right chaosfag outlook by the end. Also, the decision to make your player character basically the Prince's fanfic living an adventurous life in his stead kind of fell flat because it goes completely against the political message they had been leading up to. You, the Prince, take the throne and people respect you because of that rather than anything you did to prove yourself over the course of the game(as evident by the mass public despising you 99% of the time for plot contrivance purposes). This game would have flat out been better without the shitty calendar system, it adds nothing and only serves to make the pacing way shittier for no reason. The last third of this game is also horribly rushed and unfinished in places, I was ready for it to be over slogging through the awful final two dungeons and effortlessly destroying all the recolored bosses. If I were being generous, I'd give this game a 7/10 at best.

E33 I'd really a game that doesn't want you engaging in its systems. It has an action economy and a bunch of cool pictos for increasing AP but by midgsme you will have so many passives you will passively hit your max every turn without engaging in any of them. The game has a dozen defensive skills but they're all superfluous when you have by default the abillity to negate all damage and enemy effects. Skill balance is totally fucked where you will hit the damage cap very early into the game then when damage cap is finally thrown off the game is entirely run by the endgame skills, most of a character's skills and gimmicks seem useless by comparison.

I will agree about Metaphor holding out a lot of endgame classes till way too late, but inversely every class feels good and useful in Metaphor.

Tried it for 10 hours. All the game writting and story is "le racism is...le bad" and the combat system is restrictive as fuck. Designwise the dungeons are just glorified hallways with maybe just a hidden room or two, and gameplaywise I cant play the way I want because the game pushes me to use the released gimmicky class with the boss that is only weak to said gimmick or get screwed.

Why? They could have added some depth and of course people like the waifuing potential. Atop this the whole political system thing should have been fertile ground for allowing the player to make choices. If you're going to be the Prince as in many stories where
>Royal/noble goes out into the world, sees different perspectives, and comes back a better person and a good ruler
then LET the player do that. Pull some Fable 3 stuff (without the horrid ending bits) where you can make decisions along the way that come into play later - you can promise to see things one way when you hang out with people from Tribe X, but then when you find out that actually as much as you respect Tribe X's traditions, you later learned that they bring a spirit of nature to life that causes a famine to the nearby kingdom every X years, you'll need to make a decision to either
>Piss off Tribe X by outlawing their religious practice but preserve diplomatic relations with neighboring kingdom Y
>Piss off neighboring kingdom Y and be seen as a traditionalist who prefers certain kinds of people no matter how much destruction it does, but you'll be loved by Tribe X's zealots and warmongers

I got to the island town where you're supposed to explore a temple before jrpg fatigue set in and it's currently dropped. It was fun grinding out jobs and customizing the characters. Also Strohl is one of the best starting bro characters I've seen.
