Unlike you I was actually a child in the 90s, zoomer. These weren't "highly anticipated" launches. People were excited about CONSOLES in the 90s, and the games were seen as an extension of the console because first-party was the dominant mode. Part of this is because console stocks were often limited whereas there were plenty of games - and also the fact that SM64 was a launch title. Did you know the N64 didn't even have a midnight release?

The other thing is that hype in the form it exists today didn't exist in the 90s. There weren't giga-inflated marketing budgets, hype-driving forums, and obsessive fans who make 4 hour lore videos. Why am I even bothering to give you this lesson? Posting on /v/ is such a fucking waste of time.
