There's a couple heroes in Concord that I considered giving a vote to, but ironically it might have been the high quality graphics that killed it for me. For example, I love mushrooms and mushroom people, but that thing in Concord is so excruciatingly detailed it just looks disgusting. I also considered giving a point to the walking trash can, maybe because it lacked detail. I went back and forth in my head on whether two maybes should equal one whole vote, but then I decided it was better to put such a notorious game at 0 instead of having everyone ask who the fuck the 1 was.

I think since it's a shooting game with universal movement tech and headshots they don't want to just fill it with outright abominations who might not mesh well with those things. I also think people overstate how much Valve likes monsters, only one of the 15 or however many Dota 2 original heroes are non-humanoids (Primal Beast), but one's a goblin riding a monster so maybe you can count that.

Another argument could be made that since the game takes place in New York and has an occultism theme then, similar to things like Call of Cthulhu and World of Darkness, the game isn't just full of monsters and fantasy races, there's a focus on normal humans so the weird stuff can be juxtaposed to them and still feel weird. I'm sure we'll get more characters like Viscous and Mo in the future, though.

It's very simple.
Other games can suffer a 90% drop in player count because the players pay up front.
Valve games chose to push the lootbox gamba battlepass monetization model after l4d2 (portal 2 if you really want to count that as multiplayer).
A 10% drop in ebin ring is a good month. A 10% drop in Dota 2 is a catastrophic month.
So what did the geniuses at valve's marketing department do? Expose the game in a state so objectively godawful, to the most loyal part of the fanbase, all to chase a "launch number" while handing out millions after millions of invites.
Giving your most loyal fans the worst first impression has to be one of the all time beyond awful moves.
They're never coming back either.
