Oh I guess I just misunderstood how impractical and uncomfortable and ugly the gamepad was

It would be my favorite game console if it had fortnite but it did not. My favorite game on it was minecraft and also smash bros. It was a lot of fun when my brother wasnt spawning zombies to scare me.

I never see anyone talk about the asymmetrical multiplayer gameplay it offered that no other console ever has or ever will do the same.
Having very few games developed specifically for it + tendies having no friends to play with didn't help at all.

Second Screen gameplay was such an useless feature that nobody even remembers it was also available on other consoles.
There's a few PS4 and even PS3 games that let you use a PS Vita as a second screen, while the Xbox 360 and One had SmartGlass that let you use any tablet computer with the SmartGlass app for both remote play and second screen experiences.

I have my well used Wii U next to me since I'd occasionally play the first Splatoon, though obviously I can't really anymore. It's just a fact that the marketing was bad and ended up misunderstood in the literal sense.

We can split the difference on "uncomfortable", but that shit was definitely impractical. It was mandatory to turn on the console, so you can't use a regular controller from the start. If it breaks or gets damaged, your wiiu is locked. It needed its own brick charger. It's way bigger than a Switch for no reason. And games barely used its gimmick.

It was actually really cool. You just go into a room and plug it in and leave it alone and you play on the gamepad anywhere you want. And it wasn't 3DS graphics, it was full on console graphics in your hand.

This. They made that thing fucking huge like it's for Andre the Giant, but then gave it the tiniest pissbaby grips like it's a fisher price toy. The pitiful wireless range and 2 and a half hour battery life (that needed an entire power cord with a fat brick to charge it, by the way) didn't help things either. And Nintendo never made revisions or replacements gamepads either. Biggest piece of shit controller ever made, I hated that fucking thing and I'm glad it's gone.

It did the hybrid console thing way better than the switch. You don't realize how good it is until you find out that the gamepad's also a TV remote, so you can turn on and off your TV, change channels, adjust the volume, all by pressing one button on the gamepad. I never swap between handheld and console modes with the switch because it's such a fucking hassle to have to get up and put it into the dock and turn on the TV and yadda yadda. With the wii u, it's seamless.

The Wii U and 3DS is what brought me back to console gaming after the skippable shit that was 7th gen consoles. MK8, 3U & Splatoon were the most fun you could have online with a console.

It wasn't misunderstood, it was lazy and bad. Nintendo slept on their Wii bucks until tablets and phones cannibalized their blue ocean market and they went "oh fuck quickly release a shitty tablet".

The Yakuza caused Iwata's cancer due to his failures with both the 3DS and Wii U. Both were half-hearted attempts at continuing the success of their predecessors, the former of which only turned around because the Vita was dead.

I actually enjoyed the WIIU. If only the gamepad screen wasn't so dog shit, it could have been a nice handheld

If the Wii U was a flop then how come Nintendo could afford free internet play for it but on the super popular Switch you need to pay not only for the game but also pay again if you want to play it online??? How does that make any sense???

I kinda wish Nintendo would try it again.
The Switch 2 is peak held back by the fact that its a handheld with glorified HDMI out, not a home console.
I'd rather them get the power back into it and proper physical media with discs and a home console, then sell an optional device like the PS Portal but better so you can still enjoy it as a handheld in bed or on the couch while you're watching something on your TV/a family member is using it.

On paper it was an excellent idea, it was just let down by its half-baked state on release and the console practice of not letting you rebind your controls. The marketing giving everyone under 80 IQ the impression that it was all about 1:1 mimicking real movements didn't help.

Dual analog is a gimmick that needs to be replaced with something else, it is unsuitable to almost every game. If they were concerned with no using gimmicks, then they would just let you play on mouse and keyboard. The Wii's gimmick was already demonstrating massive utility by being suited to playing fun games properly, instead of needing to boil everything down until you can play normal PC games, but with simplified gameplay and aim assist.

The paradigm of having one big button is king, not all this faffing about with equally sized buttons.
From a game design perspective you can simply assign the action that yields the most possible fun and idle entertainment to the big button, if there is no fun action to assign to the big button, then that means that your game is bland and uninteresting, so go back to the drawing board until you have something to put on the big button.
It is the simplest and most easy to understand paradigm in the world, but it was discarded almost immediately in favor of making everything (Dpad, right analog stick, face buttons) the same size for aesthetics.
