For gameplay purposes. If guns in games were like IRL guns then there would be no point in using anything but a standard assault rifle since handguns and shotguns will also just fucking kill anything at most ranges other than absurdly long faraway fuck you range. Why use a slow shotgun when you can use a handgun? there would be no damage system either because IRL means that if it's a projectile fired from gun then it equals death. Shotguns IRL are specialized for breaching doors, hunting (some laws require that you hunt ONLY with a shotgun sometimes) and home defense. But if it's just for regular killing? literally any gun will do, all guns would be the exact same. Guns are unironically overpowered in real life so they need to be nerfed for games so they can be unique and fun within their own class.

with how heavy aim assist needs to be, especially these days, in order to make it seem playable on a controller having a shotgun be useful past 10 feet isn't allowed
there's a lot of multiplat shooters that have nerfed shotguns and explosives over time because they create a problem in the console environment
the main one I can name off the top of my head is hunt where most of the shotguns and explosive tools got constantly nerfed over time because of consolefag whinging
this also happened in siege to a lesser extent but console siege was always a joke so the impact wasn't as drastic so ubisoft put in their own effort to make sure the game became shitty

a normal shotgun might spread out to about 20 inches at 30 ft, and 40 inches at 75 ft.
they can also have a choke to force the pellets to stay compacted longer.
consider this chart to be "ballpark numbers"

the only way I can think to change this would be to have a REALLY short sawed off so that the shell was sticking out of the barrel.

You can get a surprising amount of pen out of such a low pressure firearm due to projectile mass/length.

I wish I knew, shotgun is like the most versatile non automatic (unless it is automatic) weapon in modern day. If I had to guess, they're nerfing it because it'd be too OP otherwise

I am infinitely less annoyed when I get shotgunned than when I get sniped in any game.
at least I had a chance to see the shotgunner before they saw me, but the sniper is almost always a cuck in a bush, tree or tiny window so far away that I can't even see there.

That said, I hate how babyfied a lot of games are now when dealing with either - the snipers tend to have a long laser line that may or may not flash just before they fire, and shotgun enemies do little to no damage while taking years to react)

For some reason people think that a shotgun is barely more sophisticated than a blunderbuss. Rifles are for people at ranges most video games don't engage with, and there is no speed or handling advantage for submachine guns / PDWs. It's just to add gameplay variety at the end if the day.

It's very easy.
Most multiplayer shooters require you to hit a guy with a half dozen bullets to kill from any full auto gun, and it usually takes 0.3 to 0.5 seconds to shoot that many.
No bolt actions or pump shotguns that can instantly delete you in 0.0 seconds ("but muh scope in time" no fuck that, the dudes with machineguns need to sight up too). Make it full/semi-autos only that need at least two dead-on shots.

It's more that they don't have the range and capacity that rifles do, and get easily defeated by body armor. Yeah at 100 yards someone shooting at you with 00 buck might just give you a nasty wound with a stray pellet (which would still be similar to getting shot by a handgun), but within 50 you're probably donezo, and in a building you'll likely be missing a chunk of flesh.

He said "relatively". Shotguns usually weigh more than rifles and that's with 15% of the available shots. When shotguns are a pound or more per shot and an assault rifle is 0.3 of a lb per shot, that's a noticeable difference.
A few lbs isn't a lot but it adds up over long durations especially when other heavy activity is included. Weight isnt the only/main reason shotguns aren't really used but it certainly is one of them.

if you had more than 100IQ you would have realized shotguns in stalker only really excel against trash tier mutants like dogs, fleshes and pigs and everything else is best dealt with smgs or full auto pistols with hollowpoints, fmj assault rifle rounds - or explosives. the second that clicked for me I instantly cut off more than 10 kilos from any of my mid to late game loadouts, for shotgun ammo is heavier than your mother and is also nearly useless against armored stalkers

7.62 High Calibre lol, especially in mods you get nearly every type of shotgun ammo you can think of, in that game buckshot and flechettes maintain lethality at pretty good ranges, and despite that shotties are still memeshit weapons that only really are good in the early game, and outside the early game are a clutch for making so that characters with shit tier aiming stats can still kill something at short ranges in a pinch. you know what's better than shotties under those circumstances? small grenades and machinepistols.

Eh, I'd say they are obsessed with the concept of gameplay variety, so they have to flanderize weapons' qualities to make them feel different from the rest. Same reason why revolver will always do more damage than a pistol, even if it's chambered for the same round.

no it isn't.
especially hard mode where normal rounds become virtually useless and you have to use the special rounds otherwise nothing dies. They don't even add any unique gameplay feature either it's just hidden numbers behind the scenes.
Hardly as impactful as just having a different weapon with different mechanics or at least giving the alternate ammo types some sauce so they feel different to use. See the alt fire for the mp5 and pulse rifle.
