great game in basically everything but combat for me
really fun level design, cool enemy designs, decent enough character designs, nice armor sets, nice story until the very end (got a little silly)
I'm just tired of combat mastery being "memorize the exact parry timings" and every other combat strategy being blatantly a huge step below. the parry and dodge both felt very wonky due to audio and animation fuckery at least for me personally

You get the dodge power up way too late. You should ideally get it with the parry so you can choose how you want to approach the game.

Reposting my post from yesterday.

Ah funny I just finished the game an hour ago. Picked it up after clearing wuchang.
I've came to the realization that the chinese are incapable of designing proper combat mechanics. The entire game is parry sloppa btw, but only one in five attacks have proper telegraph.
My favourite combo strings are, hold weapon in the air like margrit, instant release a slam with 99% tracking accuracy. Can't even parry by sound or anything it's just a pure memory check.
The 4-6 combo string with the enemies on wheels that stick to you so you're kinda force to iframe (or be lucky to side step the first hit and then their tracking bugs out and they swing at the air).
Oh and let's no forgot a boss charging up a 1HKO nuke, that you can parry of course but it has 6 seconds of hang time into an insta drop. Always fun.
Also the level design is just like wuchang, linear levels with some branching path to open obvious shortcuts and like 3-4 secret dropdowns just to mess with your head.

In the end it's extremely tragic to see these studios that design their entire game around elden ring sloppy die-n-retry fights. Like those tards got molested by malenia and decided to design all their games like that. I feel bad for the gamers that struggly with quick reactions because even though the game has a shield as an alternate to the counter, it's really mediocre and on some enemies you'll die from bleed buildup lol.

Overall it was ok. 7/10.

Dishonest post. Dodges are mechanically the same as timed parry or lighting steps. Only the shield is mechanically different but the seal to reduce status buildup is super late game and there's no other perks to reduce damage taken when blocking.

the point I was trying to make was that its animations are harder to read, making it a more difficult boss than pretty much everything else in the whole game. because of how the parry is designed the most dangerous moves bosses have are inevitably their small hits that come out with little to no warning or moves with unnatural delays

those were all really easy for me besides ursula (specifically her phase 1 because she can randomly go into fast moves), might be playstyle differences but I never fought anything harder than that boss in the whole game
choirmaster barely even attacks you so there are few animations to memorize, the blader minibosses you can just keep your distance until they stop attacking, and you're so absurdly strong by loskid that she just kind of dies even if you don't have all parry timings

You're a fucking moron. The game is calibrated so that you want to use the shield, parry and lightning step all in different situations.
Lightning step has low risk, but not as much payoff. Repeated use without proper timing will fuck you.
Parry has high risk and high payoff, but for a lot of attacks (especially late game) the timing windows are just too damn narrow for it and you get obliterated if you miss.
Shield has low risk and rewards using it more with the shield bash doing a fuckton of damage; it's a good option for when parry is too risky and lighting step is also too costly. The downside is you still eat damage, so it requires more careful health management.

Is why I stopped using the parry at all halfway through. Sure, the parry let you destroy the game once you learned all the patterns, but it also reduced the game to just repeatedly dying until you learned the patterns and stopped fucking up the timing. Sticking with thunderstep or shield is just infinitely more fun and keeps it a proper action game rather than a rhythm game.
Anonymous No.718881897
>>718847445 (OP)
Objectively I'd rate it as a 6/10.
But I di honestly enjoy it a lot more than most other games I played this year. It's a janky indie soulslike, but I really vibe with the designs and general atmosphere, it's littered with fun little details here and there, is probably the closest we've gotten to even DS3-style map design outside of Fromsoft, and it has some neat mechanical quirks that I think could have crazy potential in a proper sequel.

I'd probably put it on the same level of Code Vein overall, with them having pretty much opposite strengths and weaknesses that average out to the same rating of "kinda ass, but in a charming way I like and will fondly remember".

I just don't get this mentality, people like to reduce parry mechanics to just a rhythm game when in reality that's no different from how you use the other defensive mechanics like rolling or blocking. You don't stand still waiting while parrying, blocking or dodging. You time every single one to a consistent rhythm, that's literally the core of all action games. The parry in AI Limit is only bad specifically because of how it interacts with the boss, if it didn't stop them dead in it's tracks it would be perfectly fine.

So, let me get this straight.
Arissa failed her task the first time as a blader, got repurposed as a guardian of the tree then got repurposed again as a blader.
My question is, was it ever explained what happened during that first time?
Also the other corrupted bladers you meant and kill them, they come back again normal but are depressed, so how did Arissa fuck up the first time to the point she became a guardian?

>You don't stand still waiting while parrying
You literally do, though. Check any "no-hit" boss video or ask anyone who beat the game with parry — the best way to utilize is objectively just to stand in place and parry the boss with as little additional activity as possible to keep your timing consistent. The way parry works simply encourages that because trying to use parry in otherwise active combat needs a level of game mastery that you'll never reach in the first place if you're using parry.

Blocking and dodging both aren't as "tight", you can easily use them in panic and it'll let you pull through while a bad parry will leave you reamed up the ass. The safety margin lets you play the game with less reliance on timing and more on reflex with split-second decision-making. It keeps players from locking themselves down into the most static boring playstyle and optimizing the fun out of combat.

>the best way to utilize is objectively just to stand in place and parry the boss with as little additional activity as possible to keep your timing consistent.
Yeah, same with dodging. That's not how normal gameplay goes, meta faggotry and speed run type content isn't relevant. Otherwise you'd say no one should use most of the game mechanics or equipment at all.

>Blocking and dodging both aren't as "tight", you can easily use them in panic and it'll let you pull through while a bad parry will leave you reamed up the ass.
That's literally the point. A fucked up parry has consequences of a different kind, you'll still be inside the combo after also getting hit by the attack you mistimed. It's a tradeoff compared to Blocking only reducing damage but being 100% free and dodging getting you out of the way entirely. It's not even a binary choice either, you can do all three at once in the same attack combo if you want.

>The safety margin lets you play the game with less reliance on timing and more on reflex with split-second decision-making
They are both reflex and timing based. All you're saying here is that dodging is easier for people with worse reflexes, which isn't even really true since parry and dodge both have roughly the same timing in AI Limit.

I'd say it's basically a rebalance. NG+ wasn't much harder in the first place. Haven't played since March essentially but didn't slow me down much.
