it definetly is. Pokemon it's essentially a collectathon you're supposed to get a team, collect the different pokemon, grow attached to your team and build them up. Outside of online PVP, you're not really challenged by the game and instead your primary task is collecting the pokemon themselves.

SMT is pure ass JRPG where you're forced to treat your demons as temporary contracts, fuse and change them and adapt to changes to your teams as the game progresses. Your primary task is clearing the story and the using your teams

That said, it's not uncommon for Pokemon to simply give you stronger pokemon as the game goes on both wild and through story events that makes having a diverse cast in a campaign a very real possibilty, and newer improvements in SMT have made it so you can keep and strengthen early or mid game demons all the way to the endgame.

No it's not. The SMT system has way less depth. SMT for the most part of spamming weaknesses and stat changes. There are just a couple of gimmick moves but they're just that. Pokemon meanwhile::

If they weren't you'd see more people playing games without held items, an ability that isn't beneficial, no moves other than attacking ones and so on and so forth.
Then you have ones that two variables into one like the move fling that's determined by your hold item, an ability that can change the weather, a form that changes type and ability. Pokemon is the only monster tamer that does this much.
