MGS3 was made to be comprehensible to newcomers, but as someone that’s been really into the series since MGS1
was released, you REALLY need to play release order or just ignore the story. Kojima wrote every metal gear game as if it would be the last, and every sequel’s story sucks a little more than the last one. That is to say, playing chronologically is gonna be a mess because he wrote everything flying by the seat of his pants so there’s a lot of dumb stuff in the games that only exists to wrap up the previous games’ plot holes. 3 has the least of this kind of thing out of all the Solids but is still not immune from it entirely despite being the earliest game in the timeline.
I’m definitely old and jaded so take what I say with a grain of salt, but the story isn’t really worth getting invested in at the end of the day. 1 and 2 are really cool, but it becomes a soap opera after that and the story goes absolutely nowhere. Just tweests upon tweests to justify the current game’s existence and to ex post facto make nonsense from the previous game have some kind of pay off.
