But in win10 case they are putting those win 11 'flyers' right after you boot up your computer, asking for you to update your os to win11 or keep win 10, a few weeks later they will be giving you the same windows 11 installation 'option' at the same time.

Because you're on the /v/ board, which is dedicated to discussing videogames, and despite what you might think, there are, in fact, people who play videogames on /v/. Ubuntu (and other debian based distros) suck for playing videogames because the packages are from roughly the time Jesus was alive. Older packages means newer games and hardware relying on newer optimizations and features won't work well.

Some jackass was crying that I wasn't telling people to just sign up for Extended Service Updates instead switching to LTSC. So I did some research on it. I will not be recommending people do that. You have to have microsoft account or you have to pay microsoft 30 dollars. ESU only extends updates for ONE year. I would rather recommend people literally do nothing and forego updates then do either of these. If you intend to stay on windows 10. You should switch to enterprise LTSC, IOT version is slightly smaller if you care about performance install that one. Activate it with massgrave, don't give microsoft anything.

Just keep your third party security programs running and updated, don't go to weird obscure sites and you'll be fine. Security concerns are overblown by mouthbreathing retards who think Windows Defender of all fucking things is the be-all-end-all of PC security. The internet is pretty safe these days. If you switch over to IoT LTSC assuming you haven't already, you'll be good until 2032.

All that said, Nvidia and I think AMD are ending driver support next year, so that will be a concern sooner than later, but this is mostly an issue if you're keeping up with new releases or play live service games. A good workaround is to buy another drive and dualboot the computer, that way you can switch between setups at will. Give it a few years and 11 will get a stripped down version intended for businesses and we'll get our hands on that.

This is actually true. Non-enterprise Linux users quintupled in number just from Steam Deck alone, completely unprecedented since the kernel's inception but more importantly this now establishes what people are going to expect from any Linux distro from now on. They want Steam out the box, they want their programs to just werk when they install them, and it needs to be as braindead simple in usage as Windows where the user doesn't need to actually worry about not being able to use their basic, rudimentary items like bluetooth or USB gaming mice because the OS didn't install the correct drivers for them.

They did, all the old versions before Steam Deck were like this. It lacked all the things that makes the current SteamOS work, namely Proton and SteamOS specific settings that activate when playing in gaming mode. You actually could install the current SteamOS on any PC, it's just not going to be as optimized because it's specific to the Steam Deck hardware.

It would be different if there were marked improvements of any kind. The jump from 7 to 8.1, as fuckawful as Metro was, the Virtual Memory Manager genuinely made things a lot faster and it was much more secure as an operating system.
The jump from 8 to 10 was a marked improvement over 8 even if both of them sucked rocks compared to 7. That VMM helped performance in every game even if the user experience was shit.

There are zero benefits going from 10 to 11. None. Zero. All it is are dirty pajeets screaming that I have to upgrade right now despite not providing a single benefit 11 has. Worse, 11 continues to prove that the act of using users as QA testers is a load of shit that only damages our computers and ruins performance. We can't just choose to be on a stable version, the shit pushed to our computers IS the stable version. It's objectively worse than 10 in every way.

it's not an if when your windows installation isn't updated; you're basically banking on your anti virus catching the virus before it can do anything nefarious.
security works best in layers and you removed one of your security layer from the equation. that doesn't mean you'll get a virus tomorrow, that does mean you are more vulnerable to attacks.

Ending support just means it won't get security updates and what not, so fuck em. If my PC gets to the point that it's riddled with viruses and doesn't work, then I'll just have to get rid of it and I guess I won't have a PC anymore. I'll just get a cheap fucking $300-$400 laptop and use that for browsing the internet and shitposting. Yeah, I heard about the ESU thing, and it's supposed to be $30. I wasn't aware it had a "free" option, if that's even true. Even then it's only good for another year, so it just extends the time for you weigh your options. As I said, I could easily get a $300 laptop for general browsing. It would come installed with Windows 11, and I wouldn't have to worry about it at that point. That's all I really use my PC for nowdays anyway is porn, Youtube, 4chan, and general browsing. Any PC can probably do that if you aren't looking to game on it, and you don't even need all the fancy shit on it like 16GB of VRAM, some powerful CPU/GPU, DDR5, etc.

You'd probably still want decent system ram and a decent CPU just for general browsing speed and smoothness. It won't be comfortable to use if everything is loading slow and multi-tasking feels slow because your RAM is super low and your CPU is ancient with no power.

Apple killed Mac gaming back in 2007 when they dropped support for the Mac Classic environment in OS X Leopard.
Then they killed it again in 2009 when they dropped support for Rosetta (PowerPC) environment in OS X Snow Leopard.
Then they killed it again in 2019 when they dropped support for 32-bit Intel apps in macOS Catalina.
They will kill it yet again in 2027 when they drop support for Rosetta 2 (Intel 64-bit) in macOS 28.

I recommend any arch distro because of the AUR. Essentially you will never have to change OS ever again if you use Arch as it will just be continuously upgraded forever. This is why valve chose it for Steam Deck.

Fedora is a bit unstable but Mint is a debian fork which means it lags a bit behind on newest features and you need to upgrade your OS in the future, if you're a gamer you will not have the cutting edge features for your hardware like on arch.

I just watched Tim Cain's postmortem of Fallout on GDC. They applied for Windows95 Certification and were denied because Fallout installed and worked perfectly on Windows NT, and in order to get Win95 certification a program would have to "fail gracefully" when installing on NT. so they made the Fallout installer quit if it detected you were using NT in order to get the cert, but you could just copy all the files manually and it would still run perfectly on NT.

do you see what scum MS always were? to force you onto their new shit they would make devs break compatibility with their previous OSes.

i was using windows 10 up until about a month ago. it was a thread like this where anons made a bet with me that i would try fedora and come crawling back to windows after I expressed my growing frustration with windows and not wanting to swap to 11. Not only have i not come crawling back, fedora+kde is now my daily driver and i play all of my games on it. Even vortex mod manager is currently working on and close to completing a native linux application. Once that happens, I will literally be able to install hundreds of mods to games and have them completely organized.

In fact I only dualboot windows still instead of wiping it completely because im taking online courses that require lockdown browser+respondus which is unironically spyware and linux will not let it run. Once i complete all my courses, im finally getting rid of windows for good
