What is the actual gameplay to you? Do you think being stopped by Hau and Hop is the best part of the game and more fun than battling, grinding, and evolving? I stopped playing the new games because they bore me to tears with how small the grind is, your starter can just plow through the entire game without stopping once. The "actual gameplay" is team building and battling. The issue isn't in the EXP Share function—it's the fact that the rest of the gameplay wasn't made more challenging to support it. This is actually ironic because Pokemon has only gotten better and better about including interesting movesets and better trainer party composition over time, but you can tell that the developers know fuck all about making a good JRPG and that their most significant gameplay achievements (Gen 4, Gen 5) were flukes.
In literally any other proper JRPG, this EXP Share feature would be adored by all since it would allow you to use any party members you like and focus on the builds and fights. You only complain about it because Pokemon fails at being a proper and engaging JRPG.

Whichever game dropped the over-the-head camera. Pokemon only works in that style. The full 3D open world shit trivializes the exploration aspect of the game. There will never be a open world game big enough to make you feel like you're traversing an entire continent nor should you want one. there's lots of places. Gen 3 when they started deviating from the original plan. Gen 5 with the failed soft reboot. Gen 6 when 5's failure caused them to underflow into genwunning so hard none of the Gen 6 pokemon got to participate in its regional gimmick. Exp share is only ok if the game is balanced around it. If using the exp share leaves you around the same level as the champion then it's fine. If it's bullshit like BDSP where the original game clearly wasn't balanced around it then it ends up a broken mess.

You don't *need* to grind but a well designed game will make it not so much of a pain in the ass. Johto is a big example of what not to do. Extremely limited exp, rematches are a bitch and a half to do., horrendous level curve etc. Unova did it really well.

However, playing and beating the game without grinding and being under leveled is extremely rewarding. Of course if you want to be 2/3 levels under the champ at most or even equal to them that's fine too
