7 was better than 6 and I thought it was pretty good overall. I want more loli generics obviously, specifically some humanoids. Engineer from PB2 is a must for 8, just reuse the model directly. I also want most skills to happen on the field again in 8. Give me a loli MC as well and give her a cute loli GF. I'd prefer they go back to 2D but that's probably not happening. I'm getting used to the 3D though, it still has some charm. Get Sato back on music, I don't know why he wasn't there for 7. Start giving more information on what all the weapon skills and evilites are. Like just be able to view them all and at what level/mastery or whatever you get them at. Also, don't have mechanics that are unique to named units like hell mode. Make sure new mechanics work for all units including generics.

I’m hindsight, Disgaea 6 was their last chance. I remember there was a ton of excitement for that announcement, and then when it released the tone changed completely. That’s when they started to noticeably fade away from public consciousness.

Well the idea here is that new mechanics would be added with balancing them for all units in mind. Unique units already have better stats most of the time and unique skills. 7 actually did add hell mode for generics apparently in that free update but I don't think the west ever got it.

After Disgaea 6 and 7, I've lost hope. D5 was the last one with any kind of effort.
If 8 actually showed any kind of real effort (for example, not BLATANTLY OMITTING ANIMATIONS FOR MECHANICS; at a minimum if they don't want to animate them, replace the actual mechanic with something else), then I'd would be absolutely ecstatic to start getting into their newer games again.

But 2 games in a row and needing to refund them has sort of got me to stop waiting.

The 3d actually looks fine to me, that's not the issue.

That way you can have situations where you take one step and the music changes and you see something creeping in the darkness in the distance. Why exactly are people pretending like the animations in the 2D games are amazing?
Characters in those games have like 10 poses and those get used for literally everything: attacks, special attacks, conversations in cutscenes and so on, they just add a bunch of special effects and distort sprites by shrinking them, enlarging them or whatever is necessary at the moment.
Don't get me wrong, the 2D sprites are full of charm and the ways in which they reuse poses are sometimes very creative, but it almost sounds like people are saying the -animations- themselves are super fluid or something.

Okay I get that no one likes current Disgaea, but cmon, Disgaea 7 was at least a step in the right direction. I think if they start adding more features the franchise will slowly make a recovery as a franchise. Wish they'd go back to 2D.

Also they'd make a killing if they created a Disgaea maker with all of the character classes, custom colors, and even custom designs with even custom levels, stories, and voice acting, similar to what the Little Big Planet franchise did in a way and the game would be pretty much perfect outside of T rating limitations. Bonus points if we get to upload our levels and stories. A shame that the state of the franchise isn't so great.

I actually plan on making a Disgaea inspired game. The franchise has so much unused and missed potential and I want to succeed where it fails.

I'm mostly mad about the fact that they significantly cut character classes in Disgaea 6. Seeing that there are 100+ classes over the course of the franchise's lifespan, and seeing the custom color feature and a snippet of what making custom levels would look like with Disgaea 5's (albeit limited) stage maker feature. All of it made me realize the potential of the franchise as a whole. It made me very inspired and mad about the missed potential.

The generics are my favorite part of Disgaea along with the sexy designs and archetype, and crude humor.

You can complain that pros of 3D over 2D haven't been listed but that goes both ways. The most important pro of the 3D models is that the games have always had a third dimension, they just slapped 2D sprites into it which left the awful situation of the sprites mirroring every time they wanted to change direction. Switching to 3D animation has allowed them to stop that because it's using a model now.
They end up giving every character many, many more actual animations now because 2 frames for walking with 1 step every 20m isn't good enough anymore.
The facial expressions could still use work but are well on track to surpass the sprites in terms of expressive capability.

It just needs to stop bleeding features and giving us rotting skeletons of what used to be full games. Like imagine if they just released a sprite-based Disgaea All-Stars with every class, every map editor tool, and mod support. Don’t even need new story content, just give fans the sandbox and tools. But nope, we get low-effort 3D with 2012 mobile game animation and less content than Disgaea 2. Go back to 2D. All of the 3D stuff looks terrible and they admitted they only switched to it to cheap out and 6 and 7 feel insanely cheap. Switching to 3D also meant everything built up by 5 with all its systems was thrown away to start from scratch and based around auto battle shit like a mobile game.
They won't switch back to 2D which is obviously going to be the death of them, they had a dwindling fanbase already and have been on the edge of going bankrupt for years but switching to 3D has divided that small fanbase they have left. If they want to die on that hill, the least they could do is put out spin offs in 2D reusing old assets.
We aren't getting the cool NIS that went and made new games like Soul Nomad, Phantom Brave, ZHP, Makai Kingdom, ect while they put out a mainline Disgaea game. We have the cheap and lazy NIS who only makes low quality sequels.

Id cap player unit limit to 5-7 and create more compact map designs for the campaign so that throwing does make it faster but at specific points or chokes rather than traversing a ton of nothing empty space. I like the 100% OJ system from D5 but I wouldn’t want you to do it ten billion times per character, I’d want to have few if any custom characters as I think distinct units with niches are more appealing. I wouldn’t want to change Disgaea because Im sure a lot of the already in place systems are why you’re there, but I think there’s room for other fanservice SRPGs that don’t have so much dead time in the gameplay

No, and neither do I have hope for any other NIS series at this point. People keep asking for return to 2D, but after constantly underpaying your sprite artists (and thus having fucking two major batches of resignations, one during Disgaea 3 development (that basically forced NIS into portable market for a few years to train new talents because they couldn't handle the cost of development for seventh gen) and another after Disgaea 4's development (because NIS still underpaid their staff after moving to high-res sprites)) it makes sense to just keep minimum amount of sprite artists for gacha Disgaea while hiring cheap 3D animators for literally every other NIS game. It sucks but they have no money to spare.

Honesty? Try to make another hit and turn it into your cashcow for milking money while letting Disgaea rest. They did it many years ago when Marl Kingdom was carrying their ass until Disgaea 1 sold well enough to become their new main IP and letting Marl Kingdom retire. Disgaea is just overdone as a series and it's clear that devs are struggling to keep it up - move from 2D to 3D, intentionally cutting content and aggressively selling it as DLC on Day 1, cutting corners left and right during production by removing some features and guest characters, etc.
NIS is also unable to make a cast and story as good as in original one, so Laharl/Etna/Flonne keep carrying the series on their backs (they're the only ones who got sidegames like DD2, Infinite and sort-of Prinny games, plus D1 chars had canon presence in D2 and D5... even if DD2 was a good example as why you should keep the original cast alone and without direct continuation). Maybe it's because the Netherworld setting is just overdone, so I dunno, make an Angel cast and develop Celestia as a setting?

NIS pretty much got stuck in the Disgaea cycle afterwards, because everything else they tried failed, or sold far less.

The "it should be 2d" nonsense if sort of boring at this point.
The 3d looks decent and fits well, and can be improved over time if needed. The issue is the complete absence of animations on some mechanics and some things becoming a tad too gacha-like.
Actually add in those animations and scale back the gacha-like elements, and the series can be good and actually worth playing again.
