People like to point towards the depth of the combat systems that you can, admittedly, see some appeal in. They put a lot into all the different options for melee, countering, quick shots, and the general stamina system as a whole. It can sometimes even shine in spots like Mercenaries.
The problem is that everything else is atrocious. The main campaigns, set pieces, story, bosses, environments, characters, and even how the game puts you in situations where the core combat systems have zero chance of flourishing. But people see a webm of someone doing gun-fu to a group of zombies, flipping around like a maniac, and countering someone with a QTE, then say the game was actually a misunderstood masterpiece.
I get the argument of gameplay coming first, but when everything else is dogshit, and the game doesn't even allow the mechanics to be used all that well in the core campaign, it's hard to take any such claim seriously.
