The male characters should be cool with huge bulging muscles on display or heavy plate armor or modern armor like riot gear or bullet proof military gear. I don't like straight up bikini armor, but some middleground like a chest guard, gauntlets, and shield with exposed midriff is perfectly fine with me, since it's obvious the character is trusting their shield for the defense

Even a fantasy viking would go in to battle topless, usng two axes or a shield, and absolutely nobody would bat an eye at it..

I like to think of it as a choice between flexibility (the character will be able to perform acrobatics they wouldn't do easily in heavy armor)
and defense (having the armor in vital area, and the parts most closest to the action (limbs, shield)
They can wear a helmet too, but generally the idea is that they trust their skill, dexterity, agility and mobility, parrying/blocking or dodging for defense instead of eating hits with their armor.

Best defense is never getting hit in the first place, even ancient duelists knew this
