I won't say it's better than Fromsoft's games.
But my favourite non-Fromsoft Soulslike is probably Another Crab's Treasure. And probably because I appreciate how different it was from Fromsoft's games while still very much being and playing like a Soulslike.

But Another Crab's Treasure has like, physics and momentum based movement and shit. Its platforming is entirely different from anything in Elden Ring or Sekiro, and the others barely had platforming at all.
Another Crab's shells, shell effects, and shell durability, was also refreshingly novel.

But I really wish more Soulslikes had more elaborate movement with some movement focus beyond combat (but still applicable in combat).
Like why can't you have a Soulslike but with movement like that of a 3D Mario, Banjo, Spyro, or like stuff Pseudoregalia or The Big Catch or whatever the fuck. But while still being a Soulslike.

I don't think they are, they sacrificed a great deal of it to make a much bigger world in Elden Ring. It still retained the core invasion system and balanced all their weapons and spells around pvp encounters through many patches, they also added the arena as a free update later down the line.

Because all those off-brand soulslike devs took the worst and least engaging part of Dark Souls (challenging, oversized bosses) and made it their entire personality while neglecting everything that actually made Dark Souls good (level design, atmosphere and the unique human interaction such as the phantoms and invaders).
That said, Fromsoft itself fell victim to this as evidenced by Elden Ring but at least ER still has morsels of what made Dark Souls good instead of completely foregoing it like all these other devs.

I tried Lies of P a while ago after everyone and their uncle said it was the shit, but it just kind of felt weightless and unsatisfying. Dodging didn't feel as good as in Bloodborne and parrying didn't feel as good as in Sekiro. I think From just has great sound design and a great team of animators, so the combat feels great even if it's simple.

Anyone that seriously thinks DS2 or DemS plays better than Lies of P/Khazan/Wuchang/Nioh is smoking fucking crystal meth.

I am completely fucking bored by most old metroidvanias in terms of exploration. No metroid game has the level of ambition and freedom in exploration as HK. The closest you get depends on sequence breaking that completely rapes the progression of the game. The only games that actually gave me exploration on the level i wanted is Environmental Station Alpha, Rain World and Hollow Knight

I've beaten Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1-3, and Bloodborne muptiple times each, and love them. Can't manage to force myself to finish Elden Ring, despite generally enjoying it the 3 times I've engaged with it. It's just too repetitive, and the lore/story is vastly less interesting. i'm playing lords of the fallen and while there's some good ideas in here, it, like all the other soulslikes i've played, really serve to remind you that no matter how much you might bitch about from's failings there's always someone else ready to shit the bed exponentially harder

what the actual fuck is this pvp. if you think elden souls has unbalanced pvp boy have i got some shit to show you
i am about 95% sure there is no level/upgrade range for invasions. you can invade someone in the starter zones and they die in two hits or you can invade someone in areas you've never even seen who take chip damage and swing forty times without pausing, except swinging weapons is rare because there's a handful of disgustingly broken spells that just get spammed over and over again
there's none thought put into balance whatsoever and while i'm sure some people are thinking hell yeah i love unbalanced shit, you have to opt into invasions. so the only people playing this mode are either clueless retards or sweatlord gankers
also the host is massively disadvantaged in almost every way so it's like choosing to turn on the "please fuck my ass" option

god damn i whined about 3v1 rivers of blood spamfests back when that was a thing but this game makes that look like a fucking cakewalk

DS2 is still the peak of any soulslike/soulsgame. After playing through the dogshit that was DS3, I started resenting the soulslike genre. However, Bloodborne and Elden Ring really took the formula to new heights.
