Is DOOM 64 worth playing? How does it compare to II?

Yes,Doom 64 is excellent. Imagine it as Doom 1.5: Doom 1 level design, the SSG, and a few of Doom 2's new demons.

It has all new levels but they're all ugly
It's great. The only bad thing compared to the original Doom is the music, especially this banger.

I recently replayed Doom I and II, played like 10 levels in 64 and yes, it's worth it.
The levels are much better than II's, at least in my opinion, even though some of them get a little too obscure when it comes to key hunting for my tastses, still enjoying it better than II.
The new sprites for the monsters are surprisingly nice, I like it.
My only complaint is that the SSG doesn't have the reload animation, that is borderline unforgivable and I personally have a hard time getting over it. I'll have to look into modding it at some point.
Currently sidetracked by playing the new Heretic + Hexen re-release but I'll get back to 64 eventually.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the music either. I see that there are lots of people online who actually prefer 64's atmospheric music, but I just don't see it. Give me heavy metal riff bangers any day over that.

It's because Doom 64 was built from the ground up with a very intentional horror vibe. Compared to Doom PS1, which uses the same sound effects and a atmospheric ost by the same composer, but haphazardly slapped over the original Doom, which simply doesn't work.

Dooms original music was based on Metallica, Slayer, Pantera etc.. Some of the most legendary bands to ever exist. Replacing that shit with some atmospheric drek was one of the biggest fuck ups they could have ever committed. Doom64 gets a pass tho because it's basically a completely different game with a completely different mood, even if the music is shit.
>>719002320
>even if the music is shit
It's not. You can prefer the rock music all you want, that's fine, but 64 has some of the best moody, atmospheric music in all of vidya.

Definitely worth playing, one of my favorite Doom games. I find the levels to be better than most of Doom 2's. The only disappointing thing is not having the full Doom monster roster due to N64 cart sizes. It's a different atmosphere and feel compares to the the first two games, but if you can get over that then I think you'll enjoy it. Also worth playing the new levels added in the remaster, I think they're the best Doom 64 has to offer.
>>719001869
>>719002093
imo the two biggest problems are
>pain elemental design
>some over-reliance of hitting a switch in room X which opens a door in room Y with no clear visual or immediately logical indication on what door was opened
apart from that, it's a pretty good game

Doom 64 is like a 1/10 game made by people who don't understand level or even game design in general. It is so incredibly mediocre that I have to wonder what you were thinking here. Additionally, no retail wad is above a 5/10. If you haven't played community wads you haven't played even a single second of real doom yet.

It's visually very interesting, uses lots of dramatic colored lighting effects, but all the backtracking and scrounging around huge levels for keys is kind of tedious and antiquated level design. All the OG boomer shooters dated kinda badly, except Quake 3 and Doom 3, they're still banging

I personally didn't care for it. Some of lighting effects and multi-level map tricks are cool but it becomes a bit of a slog with the same gimmicks over and over.
>find obscure switch to lower platform that's at face level
>backtrack entire map to find key
>grabbing key teleports monsters around you
>every map has you fight hell knights in a narrow corridor
The rocket launcher, plasma gun and BFG just don't have as good of a punch either.

Level design is equally shitty but in a different way. Also it's missing enemies like Revenants and Archviles.

Yes but be prepared for cryptic level design that makes you do shit like walk over a specific part of the map to open a timed door on the opposite side of the map with the only indicator being the quiet sound of a door opening, which you may not hear amongst all the other ambient noise.
Still a good time though. If you like Doom, it's good.
