survival craftslop
Why are there so few good base building games? seems like every one just fails to get the appeal or building and defending a base.

Like pic related. subnautica devs had monster attacks and base defenses planned at one point and completely dropped that idea.
I just want a game where I go out and scavenge things to build defenses to survive the waves of monsters that come at night. is that too much to ask? Even recent games like abiotic factor fail to do this properly even when all the ingredients are mostly there.

subnautica zero has base raids but you're too much of a chud to consider playing as a black woman

Because it immediately turns into tower defense, but extremely boring. People already dislike wasting time on building things, and then you have it destroyed by something. Just play a fucking RTS.

what are some soul survival games like subnautica? I've enjoyed valheim, abiotic factor, dune, the forest.. can you recommend any other games like this that play well in single player? Conan?

Base defence is kinda unfun.

The line between trivial and impossible is very narrow. And the more sandboxy the game the more likely the best defense is some ai-exploiting jank.

>Because it immediately turns into tower defense
what's wrong with that? As long as the game is designed around it.

having night time being a looming deadline where if you are caught outside your base you are almost sure to die would make things way more tense. it would also incentivize building multiple safe areas for yourself while exploring which no other game really does

Problem is often that the people who just want to play legos will bitch and whine if their 800 hour build gets touched by a mob. Same reason minecraft zombies can't damage anything.

Grounded is the only really complete and polished game with base raids. And those are easy as piss to defend against for the most part.
There's obviously also 7 Days to Die, but its sourcejank
The Forest and Sons of the Forest if you piss off the locals enough can have some exciting base attacks.
Enshrouded has great base building, but no raids.
V Rising has PvP raids, but thats more like Rust where you log in to find some kid in China attacked your base, or everyone on the server has impenetrable defenses made of a million doors or some other cheese.
Raft has fun base building, and the shark bothers you every 10 minutes, but it can be made to fuck off forever eventually.
I THINK No Mans Sky added base raids? I'd have to check.
Minecraft has a few modpacks with base raids as a premise, but the AI is so fucking braindead in it that the best they can manage is a straight line to you, which means you can't funnel mobs or anything interesting.

I'd love more suggestions, because building a base with lots of traps and turrets and shit, in first person, with some other survival mechanics, is my dream game.

houseboat is too powerful since it nullifies monsters as a threat. I remember in the original I wanted to build a treehouse but then I found out handsy can topple trees and it's like, ok guess I wont do that

Everything, because it's just a worse version of an already boring tower defense genre. At least tower defense has some restriction and rules, while in this it's just all about finding a single meta build and dabbing on the dumb AI. It immediately loses any novelty once you realize how shallow the mechanics are.

>>719018107
If everything didn't take 10 million logs to build, you could justify it.
But spending 2 hours felling trees to build a base and then a monster just walks through your wall makes it seem like a waste and you just want to cheese it after that.

These games are prime friendslop material, and I hate how developers inevitably always lean into that kind of adhd gameplay which is ironic for this kind of genre
What I want out of these games is immersion, slow tense survival and a sense of consistent progression
I don't want enemy encounters every 5 literal seconds, a wiki open at all times, having to rebuild my base every time I come back to it because it got destroyed by creatures without you being able to set defenses, and a faggot on my ear going "OK BRO NOW WE CRAFT THIS RECIPE AND OH LET'S GO THERE SO WE CAN GET THIS MATERIAL COME ON DUDE, WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE ARROWS? IT'S OK HERE'S 200 BULLET CARTRIDGES I KEPT PLAYING LAST NIGHT AFTER YOU LEFT BRO YOU'RE WELCOME BTW"

>having to rebuild my base every time I come back to it because it got destroyed by creatures without you being able to set defenses
What game even has this happen? I avoid the endless EA bullshit games precisely because they're so jank I don't want to deal with it, but I love survival games. Every big survival game I've ever played has almost no mob griefing. At all.
The few that do (Grounded and Valheim) give you a giant warning before hand so you can go defend against the piddly, easily defendable raid.
Anonymous No.719020009 [Report] >>719020142
>>719019518
not him but as mentioned in the thread, the forest has you spend hours chopping down and dragging logs in order to build anything, only for monsters to destroy everything in seconds
it's extra bad because "beating" the game consists of moving large distances across the world looking for specific items, so the easiest way to play and what everyone does is go full nomad, which is stupid because most of the things you can craft/build are related to base building
Anonymous No.719020059 [Report]
>>719018449
The one game that does consistent base raids sort of well is 7 Days to Die and its AI is dumb as rocks.
No other survival game has done base raids as a core mechanic. So why are you talking about this as if its a universal experience? There is absolutely nothing about the concept that guarantees its bad.

I feel that, spent ungodly amount of time cutting trees and building my base, only for a couple mutants to rampage right through my walls like they were made out of paper. I just took the boat pill and made my mobile "base" on one only occasionally hitting land to make a simple campfire to cook something.

What would the ideal game in the genre be like?
What do you guys actually want out of a game like this?
Obviously base defenses and a fairly robust building system. Enemy AI that is smart enough to be interesting. But in what ways? Do you want it to be something like a Tower Defense where you maze the enemies through layers of defenses? Or do you want something like a big siege where your defenses have to hold out and clear huge numbers, like a first person They are Billions. Scifi? Fantasy? Generic zombies or will any enemy do?
Anonymous No.719023758 [Report]
I've been in the mood for something lately. I think Abiotic Factor brought it out of me.
Maybe I should reinstall Green Hell. I barely played it ages and ages ago on my old computer because it couldn't run it.
Or maybe Vintage Story, which I also haven't played in years.
Or maybe CDDA...
Fuck..

Sci fi post apoc setting with monsters, normal zombies are boring and easy to wall with simple barriers. you need a wide variety of enemies that need different traps/weapons to deal with

I want a survcraft slop that always has things to do. Not endless content, but the basic mechanics like hunger/cold not being trivialized into nothingness once you progress a bit through the game. DST somewhat got the right idea but it has shitload of other problems.
Also I kinda want a good combat, but I've never in my life seen a survcraft game with a good combat, literally never, it always the most clunkiest repulsive shit imaginable, so I'm not even hoping for that.
Ideal game would be 3D Don't Starve Together but without 6 gorillions of obscure ambiguous mechanics hidden behind three layers of wiki or three weeks of restarts.

>subnautica devs had monster attacks and base defenses planned at one point and completely dropped that idea.
Probably because that'd actually really fucking suck. You don't have a lot of options when it comes to combat and most of the lifeforms that can kill you are generally intended to be avoided rather than outright killed
Anonymous No.719026605 [Report]
>>719024682
so? they still could have added non lethal defenses if for some reason you care that much about fictional animals
Anonymous No.719026610 [Report]
>>719016490 (OP)
Considering what the devs intended for combat to be like in Subnautica, I don't see base defense in the game being that great. I figure at some point it would have just ended up like "set up electric pylons around your base perimeter to ward off creatures" or whatever. Not to mention that you don't even spend THAT much time in your base since exploration is the main focus. Even more so once you get the Cyclops because it turns into a mobile base thanks to all the item storage.

There's that really ambitious mod thats trying to do that. Void something.
Its probably never coming out because they made a bunch of trailers with absolutely nothing actually completed in game. But the concept is good. A bunch of extra stuff is in the void areas, and there are various leviathans you have to deal with. I think they specifically were talking about a stealthy leviathan that could assault your base, with a couple of ways to defend against it.
