I was going to post this in that other thread, but it died out. So this might not fit perfectly in this since she’s not in any of the other games but Vivian from Paper Mario. She’s not really a waifu, more like a daughteru to me if anything, but one of the few characters I've genuinely cared about over the years. I know what I'm inviting by saying it, but since this thread may not last long either, I’m not too concerned. I would be very interested in playing a new game that did feature Vivian, but that outcome is exceedingly low. I did enjoy the remake that came out a year ago or so, though.

First of all, don't take that image literally. It's deliberately a joke/bait image made after NISA went around marketing that Cold Steel 3 is a perfect jumping on point for the Trails series... purely because it was the first one that NISA themselves published.
Secondly, when you say "upcoming game", do you mean Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter? That's coming out next month and is a full remake of the very first Trails game that incorporates 20 years of series gameplay and presentation evolution.

Basically, the first few Trails games were localised by Xseed. Xseed did the Sky Trilogy and Cold Steel 1&2. Legal stuff happened and the series changed hands. Now NISA started translated from Cold Steel 3 onwards.

Now, at the time, there was a big marketing campaign by NISA telling potential fans that Cold Steel 3 is the perfect jumping on point, also prompted by CS3 being the first Trails game on the Switch.

However, in reality Cold Steel 3 is actually a BAD place to start the series because it it smack bang in the middle of a story arc AND also like the eighth game in the series overall. Cold Steel 1 is a fair "jumping on point" because it's a new arc with new characters and the writing assumes that you're a new player, but 3 absolutely requires prior knowledge to make sense of basically anything in the story because everything that unfolds is a direct consequence of what happened in the two year timeskip after Cold Steel 2.

In conclusion, the GOOD starting points for Trails are

>Trails in the Sky (the actual first game in the whole series)
>Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (the remake of said first game that is coming out next month)
>Trails of Cold Steel (while the sixth game in the series overall, this is intended as a "fresh start" by Falcom and is pretty standalone in it's own right)
>Trails Through Daybreak

The BAD starting points for Trails

>Any game that is in the middle of an arc. Sky Second Chapter, Cold Steel 2-4, Daybreak 2, etc
>Trails into Reverie. This is literally Cold Steel 5 and serves as the conclusion/epilogue to multiple story arcs.
>Trails from Zero. I'm gonna catch some flak for this but let me explain. Yes, Zero IS the start of a new story arc like Sky and Cold Steel 1 are, but Zero's story really hinges on playing the Sky trilogy to get the most out of the last half of the game, and I don't think it introduces the world in general as well as Sky or Cold Steel do to a new player.

I ran out of character space, but I also wanted to follow up to say that pic related is the actual release and canon playing order of the series. Ideally you should do it like this.

However, if you get filtered by Sky's general... oldness and lack of modern QOL features you can play the Cold Steel games and then go back afterwards for Sky, Zero, etc.

I didn't get a chance to elaborate on Daybreak. Daybreak is the latest arc and is fairly disconnected from everything prior. It's another game intended for a newer/wider audience due to the higher stakes, older protagonist and generally darker tone of the game. Basically if you don't like the highschool stuff from early Cold Steel then Daybreak is for you.

Fun fact: Most guns in Trails are known as "orbal guns" and use internal magic to propel bullets. Towa's is unique in that's called an "arts gun". It doesn't actually fire bullets at all, but pure magical blasts.
That's why Towa equates her weapon to a mage's staff.
The upsides are that it has effectively infinite ammo and can fire multiple types of shots (energy balls, lasers, etc), but on the other hand we see that the projectiles are much slower than the ones used by every other gun-wielding party member, and she can't fire cool trickshots like say Olivier and Crow can.

I sunk hundreds of hours into online completing missions, setting up businesses and farming for money, just to buy the best vehicle, or facility, or whatever. When I got it I realised it was shit and boring afywr 5 minutes, and moved on to chasing the next thing. That was shit when I got that. Filled all my garages with the best cars, bought all the service vehicles, weapon upgrades etc. They say the joy is in the journey not the destination, but that was shit too. I think the only time I genuinely enjoyed that game was the very first night running around in my underpants with the starter pistol picking fights with other players. All that shit they added way back then starting with the Karuma ruined the game and the whole thing became catnip for drooling retards.

I have the .pkg file for it but the game was always-online and most of the files necessary to run it were downloaded from the official servers (now dead) after installation. There was a project to restore it and the guy who started it apparently got his hands on that data but later abandoned it due to some encryption being used. Then he disappeared off the internet about 2 years ago. I sent him an email message, he didn't reply. I stalked his accounts on various websites and not a single one of them had an update after 2023. He might be dead IRL for all I know.
