the reason HK was such a hit and held up so well is because, despite its mainstream appeal, its the direct antithesis of recent shitty trends while still having lots of mainstream appeal. They actually came up with their own combat, they are one of the very few developers actually making interesting exploration in vast worlds, and everything has been made specifically for their game instead of being shoehorned from something else.

The same cant be said for Nine Sols, Blasphemous, Ender Lilies, Aeterna, PoPTLC, Dread, Grime, and all these other new games that didnt reach anywhere as much success. Theyre cool games in their own right, but theyre so much smaller and less ambitious than HK (despite 10x the budget lol) while all being severely bogged down by tons of mechanics that are at best merely serviceable, and at worst, garbage that just waters down the game. Because they just cloned it from another game without much of a thought or doubt. Theres still some based games like Animal Well, but without the straightforward mainstream appeal

I may not have played many Metroidvanias, but Super Metroid is in top three games I have played if not the best game I have ever played and I do not understand even one bit of Hollow Knight's popularity. I consider it to be competently made, but as far as indie games go I don't even think it's that impressive. If you're going to be derivative, it should at least be as good as what you're deriving from, and it's not even as good as a game released on the SNES.

Hollow Knight is a really bad Super Mario game for like 2-3 hours until you get the ability to hold onto walls.

Hollow Knight is only as difficult as you make it. Your build massively changes the way you play, and can turn some bosses from inpassable walls into completely trivialized pushovers. The only parts that actually do get somewhat unavoidably difficult are the DLC and extra challenges.

It's a very well done metroidvania, and has a great sense of atmosphere from its artstyle and music. I wouldn't consider it groundbreaking in any way but it's just really well put together and packed with content (took me ~80 hours for the main game and then another 60 hours for all the side content and dlc though i also suck at platformers). I've played both super metroid and sotn and I enjoyed it more than both of them.

Delaying your finished game by several months isn't really a good tactic unless your game also happens to be a metroidvania.
You're just leaving a big gap of nothing for months when everyone will have already played through Silksong in a week and would be looking for something else.
It's actually better business-wise to release something in the same month anyway.

There is also the fact that indie developers are indies because they make games out of love for the hobby, not to make money.
