I tried Turtle a couple years back. It was completely void of any wPvP and the BGs were Paladin infested shitholes because the main dev played Pally and gave them what seemed to be an instakill button.

I attacked someone in a completely fair fight in STV with warmode on and they immediately cried to their level 60 friend who then camped me and lectured me about how I was ruining people's leveling experience. I kept ganking the guy and told them "just turn warmode off lol" and they got unbelievably mad because I guess the level 60 had better things to do than babysit his friend

The OC quests are terribly written too, ESL-tier with shitty modern vernacular that doesn't fit WoW NPC speech at all. I had a hardened ship captain crying to me about pirates and ended it with "It's ridiculous, <name>" like he was a schoolteacher crying about unruly children.

I sometimes wonder why blizzard didn't adopt the OSRS scheme and actually commit to a classic+. It's pretty obvious that the demand is there, even without official advertisement and after the huge success the classic release was in 2019, it would have been such a smooth continuation.

Maybe they don't want to commit any resources to maintaining two (actually) fundamentally different versions, or hard split the community or "lore", but they kind of did it anyways since there are now five different versions with classic, "classic expansions", SoD, hardcore and retail. If I had to guess, and admittedly I know jack shit, I doubt that you need more than 20 people to actively develop a classic+, though of course you need maintenance and GM *cough* AI *cough* staff.
Maybe they think it would look bad to their shareholders if they were to put more "active" effort on an "old" product and shift attention away from the "main focus", since it could maybe be seen as a lack of trust in their own product.
Maybe there are still some spiteful devs or studio heads who despise the people playing on the classic versions, since it's not what they personally put all their "effort" in.

In any case, it's crazy that servers other than Nostalrius reach similar numbers in this day and age. I remember seeing around 25k on the 3 western servers for turtle and around 17k across the 3 servers for epoch. There are still others, but I don't think they have similar amount of hype around them. Peak on nostalrius was around 15k.

Depends what you mean by that. After 2019 the private servers that gained traction were the ones that stood out and made changes of varying degrees, which you can agree or disagree with, but thinking that vanilla didn't have a ton of issues would be delusional.
I'm not sure if it has gotten better or if there is a hardcore community already forming on epoch, but just for server stability I would recommend turtle, since I haven't had a crash despite the numbers, while the server had multiple crashes on epoch while I played. They also have probably the more well established hardcore scene. Depending on what kind of player you are, it might even be worth to stick to the older server nordranaar, since it's going to be pretty crowded on the newer one on ambershire. They are both rp-pve, which mostly just means that it's a normal pve server, but the few people who want to rp are welcomed and protected, if some fags want to grief them (in a non rp way).

Last I played wow was like a decade ago, by blizzlike I mean something like nostalrius which is just 1.12 patch, no fanmods, no patches, no unreal engine ports etc., just the base game itself.

I think most of their "side" games are running on skeleton crews by now, with deforged being "improved" by like 5 guys, hots getting no development and probably running on a single server and classic being only maintained to the degree that they can resell the expansions again. Not sure about starcraft and overwatch, but it can't be a lot, considering one is only required to run tournaments in Korea and the other is a micro transaction shop for skins.

I don't want "muh classic+" I just want vanilla with TBC talents/class balance and some other minor QoL changes here and there.

OSRS scheme isn't really compatible with Classic+. There are no activities in classic WoW, aside from fishing, that aren't combat related. In OSRS you have a dozen different non-combat related activities which you can spend a thousand hours on each. You can be a skiller, completely ignoring the combat aspect of the game. Not so in WoW. Everything you do is related to combat.
If Blizzard just adds more content in the form of dungeons and raids, things will scale out of control, in fact things are already out of control by the time Naxx releases. And this is without even mentioning the level difference shit. You can't just kill a lvl 20 player in OSRS wilderness as a max level, but there's nothing stopping you from doing so in WoW.
There needs to be a massive squish of either levels or scaling, or both. And all the professions need to be redone, and additional stuff added, if you want OSRS kind of longevity. I think this is the reason they have been doing the Seasons, because it's infinitely easier than actually doing something that requires effort

Good point, especially considering the effort required. There are some side activities that are expandable, like the whole crafting and gathering part, since there already are people who don't do anything else, but it is kind of barebones for the average player.
One thing you could simply copy is the addition of official challenge runs, since a lot of people like them and you can be pretty creative with those.

I've only played hunter and rogue. Melee hunter is pretty cool once you get to level 40 and also does a lot of damage in T1 T2. Subtlety rogue is semi support spec, that still does damage, but buffs the damage the target takes from all sources. Combat is pretty nice, since it got an update in the latest patch that makes them scale with late game gear.

I don't have time to play on multiple servers, but I leveled to 60 and raided a bit on the older turtle server and I liked the custom content. Some is better than others, but besides that one island to the west of stranglethorn, which was probably one of the first new things added, there was nothing that I disliked. Joined a dad guild and they were mostly chill while doing dungeons, helping each other out and some pvp shenanigans. Also did the 10 man raid at 60 guild intern, but I joined pugs for T1 and it was usually a good time.
1.12 client is a little jank in some aspects, but not enough to be really bothersome as some make it out to be. There a bunch of addons on their forum that work with the version.

Chinese players got their own servers, but you see some around, though weirdly enough, they often times have pretty normal names and stick to themselves, as in I haven't seen anyone speak Chinese ever. Don't have numbers, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'd say less than 3% from what I've encountered.
There are more russian players for sure, but unless you're raiding with a pug hosted by them, I also haven't had any issues with them. The only time I ran into communication issues was with a french (of course) player who didn't understood some mechanic, but thankfully you can use chatbots to translate stuff for you these days.

So let's (generously) assume 500 players are always online on average and the current average is around 10k on the server, they would count for 5% of players online.
