The joke is that the inside of the big scary moon that is gonna kill everyone is a peaceful place where children play in peace.

The four children represent the four monsters you killed, they are all hiding their true personalities behind masks, and when you kill the monsters their souls are freed, as the game tells u.

And the fifth kid is the guy they all left behind, crying beneath the tree all alone. When he says "You are the bad guy and I am the good guy" that was a really unexpected line lol.

4:3 aspect ratio, 480p internal resolution and a nice CRT shader to smooth out the UI elements and blend bilboarding. 5th gen games are simply not made to be displayed at high resolution, the geometry, models, UI elements, every asset were originally meant to be displayed in 240x360p on CRT TVs. It looks like shit in HD you completely lose the visual coherence.

My theory is that Nintendo employees like to make inside jokes at the office that make no sense, they are just non-sequiturs. Like the eggplant wizard in Kid Icarus, then the eggplant in Ice Climber, the eggplant men in Wrecking Crew, etc.. It's been going on for a long time, like even recently this happened between the Mario and Zelda teams with Nabbit and Ravio both being bunny characters. I just thought it was meant to be a jarring scene.
The rest of the game is incredibly chaotic and distressful, then you finally get to the source of all that chaos and it's this tranquil image.
It just creates a nice contrast, plus you can read it as a reflection of Skull Kid's state of mind - he's not actually doing anything wrong, he's just a kid playing in a peaceful field (or I guess not playing cause the other kids and Link are playing without him)

That sounds exactly like the kind of weirdly layered nonsense Nintendo has always thrived on. Like how the Tanooki suit in Mario 3 wasn’t just “funny raccoon,” it was referencing a Japanese yokai *and* letting the devs experiment with transformation mechanics. The bunny motif with Ravio and Nabbit totally checks out - Koizumi especially seems like a guy who sneaks this surreal stuff in wherever he can. Wouldn't be surprised if the aliens in Majora’s were a straight lift from the weirdness in Dr. Mario or even some long-lost Famicom Disk System dev memo.

Yeah, even with the mod the visual on the 3DS version are absolutely ruined. MM leans hard on its atmosphere (much more than OOT does), and suffers a lot from everything being so prettied up.
