Anon. There are fuckton of free mods for Melee already. I barely hear anyone taking money directly unless it's like a commission or something. Otherwise people at most has some Patreon button or something else.
But charging money for a mod(that changes only one character) for an over 20 year old game is kinda strange.
For example, Animelee is completely free.
Something like HoMM3 HD and HotA are free as well.
Remember, we are talking about one character skin that the modder is asking money for instead of having the usual modder attitude.

Also. The modder doesn't even own Balatro IP so he is asking money with using someone else's IP(Balatro) by inserting it in someone else's game(Melee) using someone else's launcher/emulator(Slippi) and then asking money.
It's just greed at that point. How hard would it be to just slap PayPal link or Patreon or something. It's a cool mod and all but who is gonna pay for it(especially when they can just share it for free lmao).

The modder set it to be free like they should've from the beginning rather than go Bethesda route and ask money for character swap mods that have been always free in the gaming community.

Worst of all there is a big chance they just faked the death threat stuff and instead locked it at first behind paywall to get patreon subscribers before making it free.
So the modder makes money for a mod and then becomes a victim before releasing it proper.
They could've just said "early release on my Patreon for patrons, free release next month! :)" and not only would they've made more money, be liked, but keep their reputation.
