NTA but in my job if I work a single minute beyond my contracted 37 hours a week I get it back as time off at a time of my choosing. The one time my boss contacted me while I was off work (to let me know a promotion I'd be able to apply for had gone live but would have closed for applications by the time I'd be back) he told me to put our 5 minute phone call down in my time sheet as a half day.

I got this one 7 years ago and it's absolutely fucked now. I've done some interviewing for people coming in to the same role I started in and the demands they have of them are night and day from what they used to be. It was "have literally any degree" back then and now they wanted a masters in a STEM minimum and experience with several coding languages (it's a data science job and didn't used to demand any; I knew none coming in and was taught on the job). The job hasn't even changed that much, they're doing the same shit I used to do.

It's odd Blockbuster got the image of nostalgia for this when most people didn't even enjoy going to it for the better portion of its lifespan and usually preferred the smaller local video rental stores if they had a choice. I can't tell if these nostalgia images are even made by people who grew up with the culture they're trying to represent because a lot of it comes off as superficial circlejerking by someone who only knows of this shit based on what they heard other people say but never really experienced it themselves.

I miss brick and mortar multimedia stores in general. We had a Hastings in my hometown, and beyond being a really good video store it was also the only place to buy books and comics beyond the crap they stock at Walmart. Most of the video games I played growing up either came from there or Blockbuster.
It's annoying that I have to drive out to [Nearest Major City] to get that kind of shopping anymore. Family Video somehow survived up there right up until the pandemic.

I onky had local rental stores growing up. when my dad was in a good mood he'd let my little sister and I both pick out a game, and movie. sometimes he'd let us get candy too even though it was cheaper down the street at the gas station

We went from pagers to cell phones to little Star Trek touchscreen tablets in the span of less than ten years. That's fucking crazy. Kids these days just get iterations on established tech, and even then it's like, "Introducing New Processor...with ONE more ((efficiency)) core and AI SUPPORT!", introduced by one of the many Indians who have now taken over the tech industry.

Like imagine shitty LLMs being the biggest tech "innovation" of your life when we had the goddamn internet being birthed. What a sad joke.

I remember laying on the grass at the park with my friend and he got Nintendo Power and I got Game Pro so we would swap and borrower the other magazine.
I remember being so hype for Earthbound with the spread in NP.
I remember being pretty surprised that it didn't do well at the time. Nintendo Power pushed it pretty hard so I thought it always had been the "classic" people call it today.

9/11 into the 2008 financial crisis was more rough than people give credit for. There were some days where we would have to wait for gas to be a bit lower before we could fill the car, there wasn't enough in the budget for 80 dollars weekly for movie rentals, snacks, and pizza.
And I'm from a double income family of an engineer and occupational therapist.

>zoomers get AI
No, they get algorithms dressed up as AI by big corporations because the big corporations wasted TRILLIONS of dollars on an ineffective technology that is using more energy than it can ever give back to the world.

We don't have AI, and if things continue as they are, we'll never get it.

That's so sick. I was that age in the 2000s, but I still got to grow up reading Nintendo Power, Game Informer, GamePro, PSM, PC Gamer and MAD. I miss magazines dude.
I remember an especially great issue of Nintendo Power that commemorated Ocarina of Time's 10th anniversary with a big pull-out strategy guide. It was sick; I stashed it in the case of the used copy of the GameCube port of the game that I bought from GameStop.
