joker has friends who rely on him and accept him for who he is and gets to be a hero.

goro wears "masks" to be accepted and only receives hollow acceptance by people who don't know the real him. he plays pretend hero and wants people to rely on him and see him as necessary instead of garbage to be thrown away but he only receives anything resembling that through another hollow relationship with shido.
goro is also too deep into his own shit with shido to get out without consequences of some kind, most importantly (to goro), losing his reputation because all his accomplishments are fake because he created his own cases to solve.
and that's why he didn't want shido to get his heart changed. he would reveal that or it would get discovered if people dug through everything involving shido's conspiracy.
basically, taking the conspiracy down means goro is going down with it.
and also shido has ties with the yakuza so even if goro did try to get out he probably knows he'd be killed.

and goro also loved shido because he was the only one to treat him as special, even if he did hate him at the same time. so goro didn't really want to kill shido either i don't think.
and i think goro thought shido was the only one who even could accept him for who he really was, which is what he wanted most. being a throwaway bastard child isn't desirable in japan which is why goro wears "masks" to be accepted. and who better to accept an unwanted bastard orphan like goro than one of his parents?
i think that's why goro was going to force shido to accept him in a weird way that also simultaneously included getting revenge by blackmail i assume.

joker gets to be free and have everything goro wants while goro gets to seethe and not fully understand what is even wrong with himself.

I will give you this, he is nowhere near as bad as Yukari but Junpei, Aigis, Akihiko all outdo him in damage. His theurgy condition is what he has going for him since it charges as fasts as Ken when his HP is half but that condition is much harder to meet than Kens.

I have to wonder why so many people just get their facts wrong about this game, Aigis covers as few weaknesses as he does, what makss aigis better is having a x1.2 multiplier, Shinji has better utility with early debilitate.
I swear to god people completely exaggerate characters in persona. I’m still struggling to understand how 50% of tier list has Yukari at the top when AOE concentrate/charge is fuukas job and she gets it late as well. Not to mention people saying Ken is shit when he has the best theurgy condition, the best passive for exploration and the best second theurgy for the reaper. I blame the extremely poor skill descriptions because I can guarantee 99% of people think Shinji and Kens theurgy condition activates when they go below half when the reality is that it activates as long as they are below half at the fastest rate

the phantom thieves are all grateful they have a place to belong with people they can be themselves around and not need to wear a "mask."

it is really important to him when they acknowledge his skills even after they see who he really is. it's like they did "accept" him for who he is in a really weird way which is what he wanted most.
they also are the first ones he met who didn't try to get rid of him despite knowing what kind of person he really is. even goro's mom was burdened by his existence and died because of him indirectly. so he partially blames himself for her death. he sees himself as someone no one could ever want around because everyone he ever knew tried to get rid of him or removed themselves from him. yet the phantom thieves don't try to get rid of him. they just ask him to come with them to help set things right.
and that moment was really important to him.
he even gets a chance to try to run off when cognitive goro comes but he decides to help the pt instead. because they "accepted" him in a way no one else did.
when he turns himself in at the end, it's to settle a debt with joker (for changing shido's heart and also because i think it was just that important to him that joker and the pt acknowledged him).

madarame? yusuke loved him as a father figure so he didn't question the negative impact madarame was having on his life until the phantom thieves came and yusuke went in his palace.
the other pupils are also too afraid to try to stand up to him because they think no one would care and their reputation would just be ruined further.

kaneshiro? the kids get stuck with him through blackmail so they're too afraid to try to get out.

okumura? haru is too afraid to stand up to him so she turns to the phantom thieves. his worforce unquestioningly puts up with the labor they hate and they don't even try to leave. probably because they don't think they could get a job somewhere else.

shido? i've explained goro's love-hate relationship with shido. goro empowers shido because he loves him for treating him like he's special. instead of rebelling against a figure who ruined his life like the pt, he becomes just another cog of society who enables their existence.

p5 is also about being able to take off your "mask" and casting off the superficial labels that people only see on the surface.
the phantom thieves all take off their "masks" because they no longer need to wear them to fit in and this is even seen in their persona awakening scenes where they literally take off their masks, which contrasts with goro's transformation scene in the engine room where he puts his mask on.
goro couldn't bring himself to take off his "masks" because he so desperately wanted the approval they brought him. he doesn't act as his true self like the phantom thieves were able to. he acts how others want him to act. he's a prisoner in that way.

but his mask does eventually come off literally when the phantom thieves beat it off of him in the engine room. it literally breaks.
and i think how he acted afterwards with helping the pt represents him acting as his true self.

The problem with Akechi is he gets outsmarted by nearly everyone. Shido and the Phantom thieves both run circles around him. The only one he maybe tricked was Sae.
He might have actually been a respectable villain if he successfully tricked Shido.

I'd say for convenience go for the PSP version. It finally got an English patch back in 2019. For the main game it uses the script from the PS1 translation but with fixes to the honorifics and names of characters (no more Guido or Nate). Plus it includes additional content. Most significant being Tatsuya's Scenario. Giving a glimpse of the events of the main story from Tatsuya's persepective. I think there might be roms where's its all included undubbed.

He has heat wave at that point while aigis has like cruel assault and akihiko is running gigantic fist. If you use bloody charge he crits more often which is a x1.5 multiplier (much bigger than what Aigis can get with phys amp and akihiko can get with buff amp), Junpei doesn’t have any strong crit moves at this point either so he won’t crit as often as Shinjiro.
Basically Shinjiro comes at the perfect time to show off but he will get vastly outclassed by endgame

His crit boost on the theurgy makes up for the lack of multiplier but if he could stay till endgame his passive is essentially worthless and junpei would definitely outdo him in crits cause he gets a huge multiplier from them something like 1.9. Akihiko would also outdo him on a turn by turn basis. By Endgame Aigis would also slightly edge him out in damage with primal force because of Phys amp which is x1.2, even if he used god hand but it would be really close.
Tldr, junpei is the strongest with a crit build, he can crit every other turn with revolution and rebellion on while Shinji would just end up being the weakest physical attacker, at best his theurgy might outdamage Aigis if she doesn’t crit and he does (shinji does have 30% base crit on his theurgy) and Aki but I think a crit theurgy from junpei would still win

By endgame standards, In terms of damage hes middle of the road, below all the physical attackers and only above Mitsuru if he crits. His theurgy can hit maybe the second hardest if it crits, Junpei will still win on a crit though, same with Aigis. Junpei also has the strongest magic theurgy which is useful against Joker in Episode Aigis.
